  • Joe's got an allotment

I watched yesterdays gardeners world this afternoon and am pleased to hear that Joe Swift has taken on an allotment and that it will be featured each week on the show.

Finally GW seems to have twigged that veg seeds now out sell flower ones and are becoming more inclusive of veg and indeed fruit in the programme.

I t will be interesting to see what Joe gets up too on his new plot.

I thought that was great news too, especially for those of us who are still quite new to allotmenteering. The main focus of this first ep of GW seemed to be edible produce, hope it continues this way
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

At least the lovely Alyc and her pooch got a good look in last evening - Monty seems much more up front about the help that he receives than gardeners of old.

And even better Carole K is going to be doing a lot of work on propogating, now that's proper gardening.

I loved it when Monty was taking the turf off for the orchard; you could see where his helpers had already done the work, the lines were dead straight and the ease with which they came off was amazing; I just wish they wouldn't do that, it makes them look like fools. At least be honest about it.

Not happy about that blokey from Norfolk though, telling us that we only need one blueberry if there is another within 500 yards to pollenate each other; my Oh took that on board and will now be saying 'I'm sure someone within 500 yards has got [insert whatever fruit I want to buy] so we only need one...'

i wondered how long he was on the waiting list for his plot or did he get sent a list of sites that would bend over backwards to have gardeners world on there patch.

And of course, like so much with GW, it's following the latest trendy 'must have' lotties rather than people who have them because they need them or want them because they're wanting to be gardeners, rather than the lotties being the latest faddy, two year accessory.

Its certainly "made for tv" gardening Tony and whilst like you I would prefer an allotment being featured for the reason you mentioned, Joe having a go is better than nought and might even tempt a few more people to GYO.

Carol Klein also seems to be going back to her strengths by propogating plants which should be informative and is Alys the new Sarah Raven?

Its not perfect but a huge leap in the right direction.

Agreed David, at least it may encourage more people to garden.

Personally, I can't stand Sarah Raven (if superlatives were banned she'd be struck dumb) but Alys seems much more rounded in her approach than SR.

That's the truth I am really pleased to see the addition of Joe's lottie as a weekly feature, as he has never grown veg (I think that's right isn't it?) it will be good to follow.

Snowdrop was very disappointed to find that Rachel de Thame wasn't re-appearing in this episode as he was lead (by me, wrongly it seems) to believe.

Missed it - out with friends for a birthday do and completely forgot to tape it!
I shall watch it with interest. I went through a period of several years not watching it - it just got a long way from my kind of gardening - Rachel de Thame and the blue-eyed lad - can't remember his name - seemed to be doing trendy stuff. I like me perennial border and me veg!

Good to have GW back on a friday evening, the allotment and Joe seems a good idea, at last the Beeb have woken to the facts that it is very popular now! I can't believe it has taken this long though. It's been a fashion trend for about two years now.We grapes do it because it is our hobby and not a fashion status symbol!
Wish GW would give us the weekend/weeks weather forecast at the end of program.
