Tropical Fish

Hello all
I need to have a moan - we have just set up a new 60l tropical tank and we have bought fish from the same place, I've just looked in the tank and they all have white spot. We only got 2 more today.

Fish should be nice and relaxing and I'm stressed. Does anyone else keep them?

I do - I have two tanks. How long had you had it set up before adding the fish?

You could go back to the shop and ask their advice, tell them what has happened. I know the shops I use would be horrified if they thought they'd sold sick fish.

Have you got a water testing kit. PH is quite important factor where white spot is concerned I think.

If you haven't got a tester then most good fish shops will test it for you. Just take a small sample of water in.

What sort of fish are they?

white spot is a disease but it's on all fish all the time but only comes to light in times of stress .
The stress can be caused by change of water temp or water conditions and is easly cured with a medical application from your pet shop, If it's the change of temp of the water from fish shop to your tank then increase your temp to suit the shops and it will help .
W hy the temp effects fish this way is because the change in temp makes the fish stressed and white spot rapidally grow , where as the fishes defence system takes longer to catch up.
your water may not be ready to take fish as it has not fully matured but a tester kit will tell you what is wrong.
If you happen to lose all your fish and wish to start again then use a couple of mollies or guppies first to mature the water as they are more hardy to harsh conditions or if you want an none fish stressed way of maturing the water then feed the empty tank with fish food every day for 2 weeks and that will mature tghe system.
Don't worry to much about this as all fish keepers will get it at some time and even the proffecionals will have gone through this stage.
If you complain to the fish shop they will ask for a water sample before giving any type of refund unless the tank they came out of has fish still in with white spot on them.
P.S any tank water in a shop that looks to blue or green has most likely been treated with some chemical so look for that when buying fish.

Thanks all, I'm very stressed about it, i went into our local fish place, which happens to be my second home at the moment, as one of our koi in our pond has an ulcer and we are currently treating our pond at the moment, and I started talking to them and then burst into tears in the middle of the koi shop. I felt such a tit. Apparently the blue stuff I have to use, stains everything, the weed, the stones everything will need to be changed. We got the fish as a relaxer forme and a destresser and it has done the complete opposite!

Its a pain when things go wrong with fish. When steve and I first got together he had a massive tank in his house and we would sit and watch the fish instead of the TV. He had just got it all set up perfectly, even had a breeeding pair and then the thermostat went, the tank got too hot and the fish all died. He had been staying over with me that night and went home to find a very smelly house.

White spot is quite minor as long as you treat it promptly. Hope the koi gets better soon.

Thanks kirstyb. I've just put a treatment in and it stains it all blue, so the plants have come out and the gravel will also need to be replaced, but hopefully the fish will be ok.

We still have blue water from and the fish are dying on average one a day. So now I am stressed.

Think I would be taking a trip back to where you got poor little fishes and having 'words'
Mr HF and I have bought many fish over the years with never a problem. It seems unfair that your start with indoor fish is not relaxing for you.
How many have you left? are they looking any better. You can but a treatment to add to the water, its like a fishy tonic. I think it's called Aquasil... it helps with fish stress!

We are loosing 2 a day, we have lost 3 clown loach, 2 tetras, 1 platys, the tetras are starting to look very pale and pasty looking, they on their way out we treated the tank for a week with methyne blue it looked like blue ink for a week, we did a water change last night the other fish havent got any spots still just the tetras.

it's the clown loach that has caused your white spot in the first place as they have to have water in excellent condition or they get stressed and get white spot, they are definatally not suitable for a new setup.
