Thank you very much chaps! Day off work, old man just brought me a tray of croissants and coffee and we're thinking about taking the dog out for a walk now. Was going to de-turf some more of the garden but it's still really frosty in that part though brilliant sunshine here - think I'll leave it till lunchtime when it's warmed up a bit.

Manda, sadly, more photos of greenhouse and garden would just show more of the same with various bits dug out at the moment - though the conservatory is nicely full of little trays. Your aubergines have all come through (huzzah - thought they'd all died and I'd have to bin them!) and the first of The Great Tomato Experiment are also waving at me along with a tray packed full to the brim of leeks which I did not think would germinate as the packet was so ancient . I rescued dozens of plastic cups from the bin by the water cooler at work and they are full of peas (also ancient, didn't think they'd germinate either). I've donated a load of these to the nursing wing at work as we did a "down memory lane" thing with them recently and one thing everyone remembered from their childhood is shelling peas so the gardener has done them a little bed in a sunny courtyard where they're going to have peas, tomatoes and Aldi fruit bushes. So nice to see ladies in their 90s who can hardly speak getting excited about growing things! You're never too old (which is a comfort for those of us who are 46 today...)

Happy Birthday ChocClare! Hope you have a lovely day.

Talking about the people in their 90s enjoying growing things, I overheard an old gent in the library last week telling someone about a lady he knew aged 97 who'd just bought herself a new shed! She said even if she only got 10 days use out of it before she went she was going to enjoy it!

                          Happy birthday Jane

The story of the peas has brought a tear to my eye! How lovely.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Er...no. It's absolutely HUGE - 26 quart, I seem to remember, so I haven't yet got the produce to put in it, but watch this space ...

Incidentally, in Mother Earth News this month they had a chap who makes and "cans" 9 million gallons of salsa every year (I may be exaggerating slightly here) and his tip which is possibly worth passing on to those who are also taking part in a Great Tomato Experiment this year is to pick tomatoes as they ripen, cut off the stem end and immediately bung in the freezer. Then, when you have got enough tomatoes to start your great salsa canning day, take them out of the freezer to defrost and when they are half-defrosted, just put your hand round them and twist and apparently the skins come straight off - saves messing about plunging them in boiling water and makes the whole process quicker.

So I'll give it a quick test, but for proper working I'll let you know in September/October what it's like.

We are talking about pressure canners by the way, aren't we?
