We went over friends last night and had crocodile for dinner. last month it was kangaroo and next they are getting ostrich. anyone ever tried these and what did you think.
I'd rather regret the things i've done than regret not doing them at all.

Not those, but I have had, in various places, Wildebeest, Zebra, Kudu and Springbok.

I don't know how your friends have managed to get those meat or is there a specialist butcher near them?

I've only ever had game meat when I was doing a truck safari tour of the various parts of southern Africa. Yes, ostrich is actually quite nice. On our tour, we had several nights of BBQ treat with ostrich sausages along with chicken and lamb chops...making my mouth water at the thought of it (my first time with butternut squash too). I was slightly hesitant at first, not comfortable with any non-usual meat. We were told that only Ostrich legs are suitable for cooking/eating, the rest are no good.

In Namibia we went to a 'game meat' restaurant and did have a taste of someone's Kudu, taste just like steak or venison. You can easily order Springbok which is like a sort of antelope I think. Kudu and Springbok, I can eat. In Zambia we were offered crocodile dish for starter but I just couldn't stomach it with what crocodile being a carnivore (and I'm not a carnivore? ). However people who tried it said it was a bit like fish or was it chicken, sorry forgot.

Would I eat a Kangaroo? Maybe not, as much as I can't stomach the thought of eating rabbit or hare or horse or snake (or dogs that are eaten in Korea - utterly barbaric if you ask me even for someone who doesn't keep pets).

skippy was lovely taste of real good steak but with a texture of venison without the gamey rich flavour (i don't like bambi).
The croc was ok i would eat it again but given a choice i would have somthing nicer. it tasted like chick / pork with fish texture it was just wrong it wasn't unpleasant but not that good.
he gets it from work he works for major food company and they store it for posh resturants in deep deep freeze so when it goes to use by date it get put in the skip so then comes the wombling again .

Oh I see, now that explains how the rare meat came about. I did wonder, even puzzled by it. Tell me where this skip is, don't mind rummaging for ostrich meat though . Don't think the meat will be dangerous to eat if they're stored in deep freezer and you retrieve them quickly before they thaw out.

You can eat Skippy but not Bambi but it's the other way round for me, can eat Bambi, a bit like looking at a four legged goat but 2 legged creature, no can do!

hi - i've had crocodile before in a restaurant a few miles from her which specialises in Aussie food. It was a crocodile kebab style thing. Was lovely. And tasted fishy, which I didn't expect but then wasn't really sure what to expect. Had kangaroo when in Belgium, can't think it was awful, but don't think I'd have it again.

Ostrich is quality as is skippy, I have tried other bush meats but they all tasted either venisony or very much like rough steak.

I had kangeroo about 5 years ago while in Germany. They had a ban on beef due to BSE i think. I thought it was very tasty. I have never seen it for sale over hear.

I've had ostrich on more than one occasion. Like it. Had skippy once, hated it, but then I've had bad other stuff I usually like, so am willing to put this down to a bad experience. Never had croc.

Veg4681, there is a butchers in Bromsgrove that sells Kangeroo, Crocodile, Wild Boar etc-frozen, but may not be far from you.

Tried some Skippy other week from there, very nice indeed, very steakish but no fat and very tender.

Pretty expensive though, so won't be rushing out to buy any more just yet.

In Mexico you can get crunchy grasshoppers (sometimes with chilli, a bit like peanuts!), or have maguey worms (actually quite expensive as they are a delicacy), and in some places they also eat other type of live bugs (like ants) in tacos... I've never had the guts to try any of them!! But those who have say I'm missing out! ... but I'd rather live in doubt!
