  • Peat or not?

is pat good or bad for seeds?? Or is it just that the peat bogs are running out and we should go green?

Peat was the best for mixing in as PART of a sowing compost. It's acidic by itself...Don't understand why you're not using a prepared seed compost anyway. I choose loam based for preference but use what I have by habit. Coconut fibre substitutes must not be allowed to totally dry out as the are difficult to re-wet also easy to get too wet.

I think it is well established that the peat industry was way too intensive and raped the bogs.... they cannot be replaced. We are not talking a few old Irishmen cutting by hand and hauling with a horse, but MASSIVE machines. I like most gardeners no longer use it!!! please don't either.

I agree. Peat is great stuff, but there are alternatives available now. They are not always so easy to use, but I think it's time we all made the sacrifice.
