Not being a proper gardener yet, I still have soft and tender office hands so I wear gloves when digging and doing the heavy stuff, gloves off when doing the fiddly bits.
I wear gloves when moving wood etc.......but I dont like wearing gloves when gardening, you can feel the texture of the soil and I love getting my hands grubby lol
So what if we get sores and our nails look naff, hey the end produce pays off. My hands have a rest during winter and go all soft, but hopefully when the weather improves that will all change!
I have so many different gloves, they only seem to last me one session in the garden before I get holes. I don't really like them as can't feel what's going on very well (I'm the same for washing up, never wear them).
I sometimes wear latex gloves instead and they help quite well with cold hands. I re-use them til they fall apart.
I always use gloves when doing dirty jobs liek cleaning the chooks etc
I don't like wearing gloves, not even for washing up but when you're handling thorny shrubs, clearing nettles/brambles etc, they're a life saver. Otherwise I like the feel of compost and soil in my hand when I'm playing with my bed .
pink [fake] leather ones for harder work, such as clearing [my new lottie!!! which I get at 4pm on monday - did I mention that!!!].
I double up the cotton [inside] and latex [outside] when it is cold and wet.
I worked in a laboratory for years, and for the first 5 we never wore gloves, and my hands looked like an old ladies; i had to rebel/demand/refuse to work on one set of soil as it had cyanide pouring down the sides when we extruded it; only then did they relent and let us use gloves; and i've used them ever since.
I haven't always used gloves but recently have had to start using them, mainly because of my blood thingy. If I get even the smallest nick, I bleed like buggery so need to take some precautions.
Was off felling trees today at chum's house so wore the big chain saw armoured gloves (8 trees, 4 over 40 feet high) but usually I wear soft leather gloves except when I'm planting out (gloveless) or painting the boxes, shed etc., when I use latex gloves.
I used to scrub around in the soil of new gardens, getting all sorts of 'things' stuck down the sides of my nails, totally unaware of what could be lurking in the unknown soil
And as an aside to Piskie's comment, PLEASE folks, make sure that you have had a tetanus injection
