How much is a load?

Driving to the local HWRC (Household Waste Recycling Centre) at the weekend and I drove past a place that has a big board out the front with "Wood Chip Mulch - £15 a load".

I must admit I forgot about it on the way home (drove a different way), but what do you reckon a load is?

I was thinking about getting some loads for my pathways once I've sorted my raised bed edging out.

I think you'd have to call in and see Wayne.
I always thought though that you should be careful with preserved wood on the lottie??
I have it for edging the raised beds..... but loads of it on paths ( large surface area per chip too) ..wouldn't the preservative leach into the soil rather quickly????

(Or is it garden wood rather than treated timber chippings??)
Just a thought ( I wouldn't want you ingesting toxins young Wayne!)

Good point Nicos - worth asking where the wood comes from. Might be dumped timber (which could have anything in it) or it might just be shredded garden prunings...

A load depends entirely on the size of the truck/trailer delivering it. £15 would be cheap for even the smallest load (of logs, manure or woodchip) I've ever been given though...

Wood chip mulch will probably be composted chippings/bark/prunings. It's not really designed for pathways which usually use un-composted chippings but is very useful as a mulch on the beds!
A load will probably be a pickup full but it's probably best to ask first! This will also give you the opportunity to inspect the stuff!

Locally £15 gets you the full of a car trailer. If you can arrange something bigger you get it a lot cheaper .I managed to get almost 4 tons of it for £20 cos I took a tractor and trailer when I went .They charged me £5 / ton.
As Snadger says - call in ,inspect and ask questions.

i have NEVER paid for woodchip lol.........i am cheeky and ask for it for free!!They either deliver for a fiver or i go and bag up myself............

I had half a load of manure expecting it to turn up on a land rover and trailer but oh no the biggest tractor and trailer I have ever seen turned up, how glad was I it was only half a load, definately call

Really lucky here in MK, we have such a lot of landscaping all over the area that the council contractors have problems getting rid of the chippings. At my site as soon as the chipping pile starts to go down, a new load is tipped for us and absolutely free.
