    • I still think a Grape's series would be a good alternative....sure the cookbook is almost written on Season to Taste!!

      • Do you think Christine Walkden would have been a better choice to do the allotment bit on GW ? As she had her first allotment at 12 she could hardly be described as a beginner but as a straight talking northern lass she would never put up with triangle beds. So if we cant get enough members for the JSAS what about a "bring back Christine campaign" ?

        • hum not sure about Christine W - I feel she is in the same camp as Carol Klein - too easily over-excited and in need of meds being reduced/increased as appropriate.

'straight talking northern lass' she may be - but a bit OTT at times.

                • Would Bob Flowerdew have been a better choice for the GW lottie bit ? His garden is always very messy but very productive and he really has a good take on recycling which I think most lottie gardeners learn to have (talking Squirrels here) He is very passionate about organics but what puts me off him is I get an overwhelming urge to cut his plait off and that is not nice. Looking forward to seeing Joe in his new allotment tonight. It will be interesting to see how he keeps the kids happy because I used to have to drag mine up there kicking and screaming.

                    • Lordy, not Bob Flowerdew... I can just about cope with reading him, but listening to/looking at him? No, no, no! Why hasn't his wife lopped off that plait by now? And the thought of it undone... Bleurgh!!!!
I vote for Terry Walton to have a slot on GW, I love him! Maybe as well as JS? Then you get the experience with the newbie. And JS did make me laugh tonight with his 'seed poatoes forgotten in the cellar' and their triffidy long shoots

but on the whole I really like the grape allotment book idea, it definatly has legs

and your produce will be bountifull

Terry W is a real inspiration, I have just finished reading his book, I would like to see more of him on TV following his debut on Big Dig - lovely man and so easy going and jolly.

Agree he and JS would make a good team and yep the triffdy long shoots showed Joe as his most human and the same as us for me

Haha - just caught up with this thread. I've been on TV once (BBC news 24) and was utterly terrified. Not sure it's for me.

For what it's worth I've met JS briefly at Chelsea (last year maybe?), and I liked him. Polite and helpful.

                            • I'm sure he is a lovely chap - but I'd be interested in his reasons for not doing things which he himself has acknowledged as the 'right' way to do things.

I've said it elsewhere but he is supposed to have had some education in horticulture isn't he? Surely garden designers aren't just designers - they're gardeners too (or have they been kidding us all these years?) and so should know about things like getting rid of weeds

If I were one of his clients I might be getting a tiny bit worried about his lack of groundwork by now...

                              • I'm confused about him tbh. Why does he seem so clueless this year? I'm new to gardening myself, and the programme (2nd year watching). The whole thing about germination, going off his teaching from chillis last year totally bemused me tbh. I though, i'm in my 2nd year and i've germinated doesn't of varieties. How can he educate though this programme?

My only thing, is i reckon he is excellent at showing the work thats needed on an allotment. At least he says its not normally free. Also this week, he didn't seem to be enjoying it.
