cant move to thailand, Im a veggie who's horrible allergic to spring onions so i darent eat thai, have to be extremey cautious abot chinese and just about everything else at certain times of year (garnish ) as i can't even eat anthing that has touched spring onions as my neck starts to swell and the blood starts to get cut off to my brain (very spacey this anaphelactic shock). Incidentally, can anyone guess at the biochemical difference between normal onions and spring onions? I can eat normal onions raw, and every other member of the alluim family I've tried, but since a bad reaction to a strong spring onion at my grandads they're strictly off the menu for me.. would love to know what it is as wary about growing onions, from seed at least, as not sure if the thinnings will have the same effect

incidentally, I think you can become intolerant to meat, i haven't eaten it since i was 7, and didn;t eat much then so when i accidentally had ham in the bottom of a pastry when i was in italy (theres another fun one, food in a foreign country) I was sick as a dog...I have a dream:
a dream that, one day, chickens can cross roads without having their motives questioned.

things have to travel so they are picked way before they are ready then they have to travel also not knowing exactly how many chemicals have been used even organic produce can have a certain amount of chemicals used, what with pollution as well oooooo this could go deep will stop now, i was a vegetarian for 14 years well ate fish was soo happy when i had my first pork chop everyones differant, its like all these things your not suppose to eat peanuts for instance while your pregant surely it would build defence against intolerance to nuts ????
i believe our ways of life have contributed to some intolerances, yeast for instance is in everything even painkillers, diabieties sugar, yeast sugar salt all forms of preservative in pretty much everything.
have had to do lots of research as mum has ulserative colitis, ibs and m.e. and theres loads of stuff she cant eat,
Everything in moderation, ok will really stop now
just so not fair especially when its the food we love that we can no longer eat

All onions have oniony compounds in them (tell me if I'm been too technical ) I wouldn't have thought that SOs have more than regular Os. Most SOs can be grown on to be real Os...wander what the difference is???
Could it be something to do with what they clean then in ? or the chemicals they apply ?
Have you tried GYO SOs ? What are your symptoms ?

Allergies; tell me about it.
Was allergic [and not just intolerance; i would turn bright red and be unable to pretty much move] to milk products and orange juice - this lasted for 10 years. 10 years with no chocolate or cheese. OJ I can take or leave. Chocolate or cheese - nightmare. Also a vege since 17 so I had to learn the fast way how to make food taste nice!
I have no idea how it works; went to a homeopathist and she very nearly killed me with her 'treating like with like'. I managed to get rid of it myself after 10 years by eating tiny tiny amounts and increasing them tiny bit by tiny bit; until one day I bought a bar of chocolate and never looked back. My first pizza in 10 years was a milestone and a moment to rejoice.
Used to have soya milk, and still to this day can't actually drink milk straight [can just about stomach it on cereal as long as there's not too much swimming about], but drink milky coffee like it is going out of fashion. Can't touch milk shakes either - too scared to.
The spring onions one is unfathomable tho'; I'm sure some research centre can tell you when the difference is and if it can be combated. At least you can have other onions. Perhaps it is the age rather than the type; something might not be present in older onions that is in younger ones? If I find anything out I'll give you a nod [that's the sort of useless thing I might just come across].
Anyone wanting the best vege restaurant ever; visit Squeek in Nottingham. Just totally lush food; all vege or vegan choices. And the chocolate desserts are the absolute orgasmic ***words fail me*** to die for treat of the year.

For veggie food ( as well as other ) try the Wagamama they have them all over the country its Japanese, we went to the one in Exeter last night for our anniversary, but don't do what we did the first time and ordered enough food to feed an army. The bowls of soup are enormous and you get a small ladle to eat it with!! They give you chop sticks but you can ask for cutlery.Last edited by jackie j; 16-04-2008, 09:15 AM.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak

Wagamama is great - there are other similar noodle bars around too. Jeannine and I go to one about once a fortnight and order the exact same three dishes every time. You'd think we'd get bored but it's just so delicious, and they change the ingredients of the main dish according to what's seasonal.
The thing that bugs me most about being veggie is that, despite being almost 10% of the population, we're so marginalised. Meat-eaters often choose the veggie option, so why not have more than one on a menu? How sick am I of eating mushroom risotto or veg lasagne when we go out with friends?! And why is it the same price as a steak?!
This is at its worst when you eat at a catered buffet - they make enough sandwiches for everyone, but only three on a plate of 20 are veggie. Of course all the meat-eaters grab a ham, a tuna and a cheese for variety, leaving bugger-all for the vegetarians. Ask if they have any more and the staff will be guaranteed to ask 'do you eat fish?'. Grrrrrr!Resistance is fertile

My other beef [ha ha] is that when you do have half meat and half vege sandwiches in a buffet [which means quarter vege after you take the tuna and prawn ones out of the equation] - they have put them on the same plate or piled them up together and sliced them; so you get cheese with tuna smeared down the side or dripped onto the bread.
Vile vile vile.
I learnt a long time ago to take food with me, buffet or no buffet.

As its only OH that's veggie we do find it very hard and what Paul says is so very true. If we have a party or invite friends over they all get the veggie option, then they say whats this its delicious. But when we go to theirs hardly anything veggie. When we go to my sisters whatever the occasion we now take his own food its much easier for her although she is a good cook better than me. We laugh about it and its not cos she cant be bothered she has in the past made sure he is catered for. When as a family we get together especially when mum was alive it was a nightmare as mum was Celiac, OH veggie and diabetic and her daughter-in - law and daughter don't eat fish.
When we were on honeymoon in Paris we walked out of a restaurant as they had put fish on his plate and they took it off and brought same plate back. A work colleague who was french had written him a card in french explaining what he couldn't eat .Gardening ..... begins with daybreak

and yes, just spring onions, can eat red and white onions (raw + cooked) garlic chives, leeks the lot.. except spring onions.. even just the tiniest bit and I feel my neck start to swell and I get spacey and then have to ferret through my food for the culprit.. last time it took me unawares was in a veggie chilli , they pop up where least expected it must be a young plant thing I guess, and no, haven't tried growing my own.. too scared of the effects, have been told it's hypoxia as the blood is getting cut off to my brain so it's not something i want to test especially as the effects seem to get worse with each tiny exposure..I have a dream:
