Hi, My son has just been offered a job in the States working on a summer camp for children aged 7 - 15. Its fairly low paid, but he's looking forward to the experience. His visa is being sorted by the ICCP (something to do with the YMCA) but the camp has emailed him to advise him he needs to get a police check done. Is this the same as a CRB check and does anyone know how we go about getting one and how much they cost? Thanks.

The employer usually gets the check done. Does this link help? Criminal Records Bureau - ApplicantsAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Thanks two sheds, I thought it was the employer that usually did the CRB check, but they have said that he has to get it done himself. He's reluctant to question it as he feels lucky to have been given the opportunity as there were loads of applicants after only a few jobs. He's only going to be out there for about 3 months, but already the costs are creeping up

I'm not sure that he will be able to do it for himself. I know it was over 2 years ago but I had to apply for CRB checks for Cruse bereavement support workers and I had to supply the registration number of Cruse UK and I was an authorised signatory for them.

And once it's done, it isn't done if you see what I mean. I had one for work - administrator at a school - but had to get another done when I volunteered for a kids' after school club once a week on my retirement. I am absolutely the same person and results were the same - another wad of money paid over by the group. In fact, thinking about it, I even had to have one while my work one was current because an after school club was set up on the school site and I acted as treasurer. I left work at 3.30 p.m. It took place in another part of the site from 3.00 - 6.00 so I wasn't even there most of the time and certainly never in the rooms at the same time as the children. Still, it was another fee they claimed. It's a real scam by the government under the pretence of caring for the children. It's a back-covering exercise.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Its a great expereience for him, I did it quite a few years ago now but be aware that his "pay" will barley cover his living costs, soap toothpaste laundry etc. if he wants to do any travelling after he needs to take plenty cash.Yo an' Bob
