i was bought a jamie oliver Journel book - I use it make notes of which seeds I have sown and when, also draw diagrams of my plot, so I know how many rows of which veg I have etc.

I have been growing for about 3 years and this is the first year I have really made any notes. Its working out well and I would recommend it. It helps to keep track and also you know which type of veg you grow well.

Lozza, I didn't know there was a Jamie Oliver Journal Book. I was talking about the one you see him writing in on TV. Do you know if they are still available?
      Do it! Life's too short

I got it for Mother's day so I think they are still available, all it is really is loads of blank pages but it is divided up my months. Also a few colour photo's of some of his receipes.

I love it. Keeps everything tidy

i started with what was ment to a notebook but has ended up a sort of diary i have everything i have plant wise noted.(not tools im not that bad ) seeds in herb and ediable flowers on one page the company name i got them from variety and notes on how they should be grown, and so on with veggie and flower seeds with a space, to compare my growing notes with the company notes, then all the shrubs i have so that when people come round i can tell them name either latin or normal (im hopeless with remembering names ) then a seed planted list with dates so i can stagger them out over the months, but then im a doodler so i have drawing of garden in differant angles with a few quirky notes with also spaces for what i would like to plan on putting there next. You name it everything started small now im running out of space in my book, i also have a book on my window sill to record the temp and rain fall along with more doodles of the weather i.e. like they have on the news and quirky notes about my moaning of the rain etc. i doodle more though when im sitting in my greenhouse on a hot day after i have done all my "chores" even started to record bug and birds but more on my son request as he likes to study them

i'm starting out this year, and am recording when i sow the seeds, how many ( only planting for me so its not huge numbers!), when they poke thru the soil, when they get transplanted.
when i get the lottie keys (please be in the next week!), i'll add temp and rain info, how much produce i get, info on successional planting...gaps to big or small etc, as well as anything about the site i may need to know for the coming years. i expect to be quite anal about it this yr, then as i get the hang of it, will relax somewhat!.

I keep one of those little boxes that you put cards in and record what and when i planted, how many rows, if they come up or not will add more as the season goes.

Here's a sample of what my notebook is like. I started with 3 plots nearly 2 years ago.

"Now I’m a bit worried, I’ve got to take Ann to the site, this is where all my customer service skills are going to be put to the test. How to sell the Serengeti as a vegetable plot? Are there really lions living on the plot?

No sweat, Ann can see the potential but “how far back does the plot go?” “Come on I’ll show you” I start walking through the nettles but Ann declines and said she will watch from the path. Onward bravely into the unknown I go and fall down a trench, climb out of the trench up over a hump and straight into another trench. It feels like a relief map of the Himalayas under foot, what the hell have I done?

I end up at the back of the plot as near as I can tell, there are bodies of dead pigeons back here, perhaps there are lions around! Stay firm Bull, the little lady is watching, you’re British damn it, stiff upper lip and all that.

There appears to be a mound covered in bush, could this be an ancient burial mound? No I think the people next door have been dumping their rubbish for a number of years.

Now I think at this point either my enthusiasm had been over sold or we were suffering from collective madness.

Ann looks to the right of the plot and says “What sort of tree is that”

“Come on says I, lets have a look” and set of through the nettles, “I’ll watch from the path” says Ann

                    It’s a pear tree.

“You like pears Ann, we will be able to have some of those, it’s on a vacant plot”

Then Ann said a fatal thing. “What happens if someone leases that plot?”

Sitting at home, we discussed the plot with the little pear tree on. As the rent on one of these plots is less than £30 per year, we could afford to rent plot 124, own the pear tree and plant some other fruit trees and have a little orchard.

So then we would have plots 122 and 124!

Well wouldn’t it make sense as the rent is less than £30 per year for a plot to have the gap in the middle, plot 123?

Well as we wanted plot 122 as a veggie plot and we are now going to have plot 124 as an orchard, what would we put on plot 123? Ah Victoria loves strawberries, raspberries etc, we could plant soft fruit."
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I recently discovered a need for a small notebook.

Walking round garden centres and looking at plants and thinking - "ooh, that'd look nice in the garden", then getting home and forgetting what they're called.

Anyone recommend a good place to get a little pocket sized notebook?

Never heard of borders bookshop? I'll have a gander though, thanks for the tip-off.

Incedentally did you see the BBC news this morning going on about honey bees being wiped out in the UK by some virus that they're having problems with in the States. Some saying that honey bees in the UK will be wiped out in around 10 years?!

I did find a place that sells Elephant Poo paper (we bought some back from Sri Lanka after our honeymoon) though: Stationery - Eco, recycled, fairtrade Notepads :: Green Eyed Frog

                          Sorry about the off-threaded-ness.

                          As you were.
