I've just taken on a second plot which was vacated when the holder had a stroke last year. Apart from dandelions and the odd clump of grass it's weed free; comes with a shed and a 1/4 full compost bin. Even better it's right next door to my original one and once the dandelions have gone it only needs rotorvating and then in go the veg.

Lucky you!! Even if ANY come free in our site, they are uncultivated ones, and there is a HUGE waiting list for them (151 onthe list and only 102 plots in total, very few of which will change hands). And chances of a new site closer to home are nil at the mo....

ooooooo, lucky you. I'm desparate for a lottie. Isn't it funny, no matter how much space you've got, you always want more. This time last year I was using pots on my patio, then my lovely neighbour built me raised beds but even though they're not all planted up yet, with what I'm planning I know I'll run out of space pretty soon. Well done to you for managing to get one right next to your original plot

Yep!

Half pint dandelion flowers (only the petals, pull them off and discard the green bits)
Pound and a half sultanas
Juice of 3 oranges and a lemon
Pound and a half of sugar.

Mince the sultanas, juice the citrus fruits and pour on about 3 pints boiling water. When cool, add 1 teaspoon pectic enzyme (pectolase - Boots usually have it) and the flower petals. Cover with a clean tea towel. Next day add wine yeast. Don't stir yet - the yeast works quicker if you let it work in one area - stir it the next day. Stir daily for about 5 days - the yeast will use most of the sugar in the sultanas.

Strain through muslin/old, clean teatowel - whatever - then put into a demijohn. In another container, dissolve the sugar, allow to cool a bit then add to the rest of the stuff in the demijohn. Top up to the shoulder, let it ferment out and then bottle. I've got the last bottle of last year's to have tomorrow - Himself's birthday!

Then of course, you can dig up the roots and roast them in a slow oven, put them in a coffee grinder and make Dandelion Coffee. Only it takes almost, but not exactly, totally UNLIKE coffee!

3 Plots Lunatic

I've had these plots 2 years come the end of July and while I still have some more raised beds to make I'm still getting plenty of produce.

The right hand side is my "orchard", the middle plot is the fruit cage, greenhouse and shed. Then the left hand plot is going to be for everything else.

Ill health has stopped me getting as much done as I would have liked and having a full time job gives limitations.

scarily.. even tho I'm still struggling to get plot 1 under control, I'm already wishing I'd take up the offer of the plot next to it when i started (previous owner had both) then my current one could have been an orchard and the one next door for the serious veg growing.. it's a worrying compulsion.. especially as it's just me.. seem to seriously overestimate the amount i can actually eat!
