  • phrases or expressions that drive you crazy!

Hi all, this thread is not meant as an attack on anyone, or me having a go at anyone, just as a bit of fun!

I wondered if there were any expressions people use in everyday conversation that drive you nuts? I am sure I am guilty of these too esp if have had a drop or two of vino, but here are mine....

'At the end of the day' no idea what this actually means but it really annoys me!

'If I'm totally honest with you' always makes me suspicious that they would normally be telling me a fib!

'Personally... I would etc'. If you are talking in I then surely you don't need the personaly bit?

'At this moment in time'... Time now cannot surely have any other moment? Surely the word 'now' would do instead???

Anyone got any that drive them bonkers too?!

Hi, I also use the expession "don't stand there like one of Lewises" I think this expression came from when clothing dummies were introduced to the famous store Lewises, and maybe dick was a jolly jack tar.

I always say "Stop standing around like a tin of milk" to the kids, they haven't got a clue what I'm talking about

I really loathe "At the end of the day.." too, and "Trust me...." NO!!

the one of lewis's expression, according to my Mum (who is a scouser) is to do with the statue on the corner of the old Lewis's store in Liverpool, a naked man I think!
Have no idea who Dick is though!!!!

As a mancunian I hear this prettie much every day and I cant stand it-

                        Innit

Everything about it annoys me. Whats the point of this phrase? It seems to be used at the end of most sentences and as a reply in a conversation for prettie much everything. The word/sound really doesnt have any meaning so I dont get it at all and it really bugs me. I wish people would talk English.

One of Lewises was a common Mancunian expression too. Like a shop window dummy, I took it to mean.

Not so much a spoken expression but I really squirm when people do the "rabbit ears" with their fingers to indicate a quotation. If you can't indicate this with your voice you don't deserve one!

Any Americanisms really get my goat. A colleague of mine, when asked how he is, invariably replies "I'm good!". It's not that offensive in itself, but you know how things can build up cumulatively? Grrr.
