    Ian Rankin
    Anne Tyler
    Kate Atkinson
    Christopher Brookmyer
Alexander McCall Smith (but only the Isabelle Dalhousie series)

they are the authors that I rush out to buy when I hear they have published something new. So sad that the final Rebus has been written but looking forward to whatever else Ian Rankin does next

      Ian McEwan
      Umberto Eco
      Sebastian Faulks
Terry Pratchett (odd this one as I don't read anyone else in this genre)
Can't stand John le Carre, but loved The Constant Gardener,
There are probably hundreds of other authors though whose books I have read and whose work I would buy if I came across them. And one (Dan Brown) who I would avoid like the plague.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Wow, we are a varied bunch aren't we. Thanks for sharing that. I just love books. There are so many in the house that loads have to go up into the loft. It is a bit of a pain when you realise that the book you are looking for isn't on the shelves and you have to go ferreting about in the loft. Must make good insulation though.

I'm too promiscuous to have a constant list of favourites.
When I was a teenager I loved Jilly Cooper (not Jackie Collins) and James Herbert/Stephen King: I did Eng.Lit A Level and still loathe Jane Austen.

As a children's author, I think Dan Kissane is unbeatable!

My favourite authors are Bill Bryson, Terry Pratchett, and Chaim Potok, but not necessarily in that order.

                            Nicely resurrected thread dude!

                            1) Terry Pratchett
                            2) Judith M Berrisford (wrote the 'Jackie' series of pony books for teenagers - I still read them)
                            3) Phillipa Gregory
                            4) Agatha Christie

                              Kazuo Ishiguro
                              Donna Tartt
                              Sarah Waters
                              Lisa See
                              Xinran Xue

                              Not faves but still enjoy;
Stephen King (the ones I've read have really surprised me - very good)
                              Bill Bryson

As a kid I worshipped the Magic Faraway Tree books and all the various school series by Enid Blyton

I seem to be in a bit of a minority of not liking Terry Pratchett - don't like that genre at all. I disliked Jane Austen at school too, and still (maybe unfairly) avoid her.

Oh and Janeyo, I also confess to loving a bit of Sophie Kinsella on holiday.
                              I don't roll on Shabbos
