Expert IT help needed re laptop mouse

I've got a problem with my laptop, Toshiba Tecra 9100. It uses an accupoint touch pad which appears to have stopped recognising it, although it still moves the pointer?

I've tried plugging in an external mouse but it doesn't recognise it either. I've tried a system restore and uninstalled the mouse drivers - nothing the only input device I can use is the keyboard!!!! Not easy as you can imagine.

Has anyone any ideas, I really, really, really don't want to have to re-install Win XP....

Have you gone to the Add/Remove Hardware section in Control Panel and then trouble shoot the device and re-install the drivers?

How does the touch pad not work yet you still can move the pointer? Do you mean you can not right or left click? Try tapping the touch pad this has the same effect as pressing the left and right keys.

If that fails, try an external mouse with a USB connection, these are plug and play devices and ought to work straight away.

As I remember for the external mouse to work properly it needs plugging in before you boot up your computer - I don't tend to use one with my laptop and have been caught out by this in the past.

Lol! I'd enabled it in the bios an all, but forgot it was a ps2 mouse - thanks for that, I've got a mouse now!

I have no idea why the laptop mouse-button moves the pointer about but the buttons to 'click' left and right won't work???

Accupoint is not that type of touch pad.

This might sound daft but you dont have any dust or grit under the edge of the pad? Sometimes our mouse pad takes on a life of its own and then it starts working again. We have a wireless mouse now which my husband likes better than the little pad which doesnt seem to work for his big hands. Just a thought.

The toshiba's accupoint is similar to the IBM thinkpad's, its not a 'touch' pad but a little 'nipple' () in the middle of the keyboard, that moves the pointer. This is working. Then there are four buttons that 'mimic' the buttons on a mouse, these aren't working.
