Greenfly - how do they know I am coming?

I am a 'squish em with me bare hands' cos I'm 'aaard. Start of the season, no probs, sneak up - squish and out ...now, they jump off the roses when they see my hand coming in....honest

I can squash greenfly, blackfly and baby snails in my bare fingers - but not lily beetles (too crunchy).
Am I a wimp?
