Well, it's raining quite hard along with the thunder and lightening here and just about every bucket, old pan, Tubtrug etc. is outside at the moment catching rain - no water butts Fingers crossed for you, I know how frustrating it is not having water - we haven't had any for a couple of weeks and I was having to use my hose and the water here is highly chlorinated. Knowing the British climate though, I don't think you'll have long to wait

Plenty of rain here in Kent today, which I really needed, as I'd emptied the 3 water butts over the weekend. It's also watering in the beans I'd planted out, but I hope I can get more stuff planted over the weekend.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Its been raining on and off here all day. So chuffed. Its watering in the plants I've put out over the last few days and with luck the ground will be a bit more workable (but hopefully not waterlogged) afterwards.

I just checked the BBC forecast. Apparently we have heavy rain here at the moment. I just looked outside, and it's as dry as ever.
We've planned a hike tomorrow, so it will definitely rain then. About half way round our walk.
We need it, the soil is like dust.

Me too, after several weeks with no rain the ground has gone from really soggy to really dry. However, before you start applying water every day please have a feel under the surface. My lottie is really dry at the top, but around 3" deep is OK. Obviously if your crops are in pots you will probably have to water every day, but on open ground you shouldn't need to. The idea is to give a good soak when planting out, and then again only when really necessary - this encourages the roots to go deep into the cool damp soil looking for the water they need. If you water every day this encourages roots near the surface where they will get burned and frazzled. The more often you water, the more often you will need to.

So where's my share of the rain? I'm not that far away from Haverhill, am I? Absolutely nothing here, although the BBC said we would have rain from 4pm

For about the last 8 months we have been saving our 4 pint milk containers and all over winter filling these from the water butt. There is a pallet full under the markey stall that I use, along with the the bottom shelves in the greenhouse and a pile of them at the back of the shed.

This added to the two water butts gives us an edge till we get rain again.

Ann finds these easier to use for watering in the greenhouse and on my strawberry growbags on the market stall shelves.

It's raining at present so the stocks will start to increase again.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

Yes, it's raining as I predicted ... we have all our hiking stuff sitting by the front door. Now waiting to it to dry off a bit so we can get out. Why can't it only rain at night?

This seems a brilliant idea. Does the water have a storage life? I would imagine you cannot use water butt or that water on seedlings (so I havent) but are there any other guidelines?
