I have to be honest I wasn't the most exicted at this month's freebie as I too have too many.

How about something a bit more exotic GYO? The Rab Cima de Rapa seeds we a nice change...?

Oh, I think free seeds are good! From memory we have had sprouts, chillies, butternut squash, courgettes, carrots, wok broccoli, tomatoes and salad leaves. It is the time of year for growing and eating salad so I guess it makes sense to have salad leaves as the free seeds.

Oh no, I like a freebie as much as the next

I must have joined too late for the squash and chillies thou... just feels like we've been getting carrots and salad forever (I got my subscription at chrimbo).

Sorry, sisn't mean to sound ungrateful. It's just that I already had toms, carrots and salad before christmas ready and waiting. Now rainbow carrots or a heiritage tom I could get excited about as they're different.

At the same time though I realise the mag is providing basics for readers to keep them going, and also trying to tempt newbies.

Mine arrived yesterday morning and I am restricting myself to just a couple of pages at a time! I'm trying to make it last longer than one day! I usually bury my nose and don't come out until I have read it from cover to cover more than once!

As you say, time of year for salads - something which I don't really enjoy! Much prefer my cooked veg, but enjoy a lettuce and tomatoes now and then. Now if we had avacodo trees - well that would be a different matter. Oh also like beetroot but that is about it, for salads!

I'm not trying to be different or anything but i was delighted with mine and sowed some today.

I think my problem is that firstly I already had a packet when I got that offer!

Also I'm never sure how much you should pick! Do you wait till it's a few inches and then just shear off all the leaves or pick off one by one? Does it make any difference?

I quite like the free seeds too as a beginner as I have tried growing things which I wouldn't have bought seeds for myself. Will be far more useful when i have moved to a house with a bigger garden though.

                            Gryfon

I just cut the hole plant about an inch from the ground and then let the leaves grow back.

I found that this was best with my rocket otherwise, when you just take a leaf here and there, it all starts to run to seed.

                            Hope this helps.

If its free I'll plant it. I guess I wouldn't have bought a packet of oriental salad mix so I'm only too glad to get one free to try.
