i've been feeling a little guilty that now the weathers nice my (almost)6yr old has been l8 handing in her w/e homework as we've been busy at lottie, yesterday the guilt was gone..whilst i presumed she was playing with the others(or vandalising our car with her little bro!)she'd actually found an old pumpkin seed, filled a pot with soil & labelled it up(even spelling correctly).when she brought her work to show me even reassured me she'd planted it right!(on it's side)......maybe she's not missing out so much after all!! our boy on the other hand learnt that if you sit on a car bonnet throwing big stones onto the roof 2 slide down the windscreen you get slightly unhappy mummy & daddy!!the big splinter he got after helped gain our forgiveness which if anyone got any ideas 4 removal would be gratefully recieved!!

A slice of soap on the splinter site and a plaster should help soften the skin and 'draw' the splinter out. A good old-fashioned hot backside should sort the throwing stones problem quite effectively too (sorry, Victorian parent here)

Ahh! Isn't that lovely, bet you're reet proud!
Re the splinter, if you can't dig it out with a sterile needle, mix up some (hard)soap (sort of shaved off a bar) and sugar put a load on and cover, change frequently, don't know why or how it works but it should draw the splinter to the suface then a gentle squeeze should do it!

Magnesium sulphate (available from any chemist) applied to a plaster will draw out a splinter. Usually works well. If using tweezers ALWAYS pull the splinter out in the same direction it went in (Hope that makes sense.)

My first thought is what the hell is a 6yr-old being given homework for?

As you can see from what your young 'gardener' produced - she has absorbed a far more worthwhile activity learning from mum and dad - which will stand her in far better stead in the years to come than handing in a piece of work - which imho - most probably should have been learnt and completed in school.

With apologies to any schoolteachers here - but kids of that age should learn by example and repetition - preferably through play or a useful activity.

I totally agree, within the next couple of years I will be a teacher and I will let the kids play, as this is totally how they learn, wish there was more people like you about.

I am a teacher and wholeheartedly disagree with homework. I would much rather my kids, and those in my charge should be outside runningabout and using up their energy, leaving them ready to sit down and learn when at school.
Unfortunately, the government don't agree with me

Lauren is 7 and her teacher does not give homework, but does expect reading and spellings to be practised and reading diaries to be signed by parents. Now and again Lauren will mention something she has done and want to find out more for herself though, admittedly not as much now as she prefers to play out with her friends.
