I live in the frozen north but the weather is lovely here. Forecast says overnight temps could be down to 2 or 3 so the few frost sensitive things I have outside have been covered with fleece.
Still putting the toms, cucs, squash and outside tenders out during the day and bringing them into the conservatory at night. Next week they're going out for good. I promise them !!!!
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
good ol dad he gave me a call earlier to warn of the frosts, but we're only 4 miles off the coast here so rarely suffer from frosts. It should average 7 degrees here tonight according to bbc.(if you trust them)
Yesterday whilst walking to the lottie an old guy said to me 'oh dear that was a good frost last night'. I hadn't even realised there'd been one. Quickened my pace so as to find out what damage had been done on the plot. A few of the potatoes had some frost damage but that was all.
Checked the forcast and went and bought more fleece. Covered potatoes on lottie and Runner beans in garden at home. Couldn't totally cover runners so built a sort of fleece fence around them and then started worrying that I'd made them their own personal frost pocket. So late last night I filled loads of 2 litre bottles with very hot water and lay them down in amongst the runners. This morning although we'd had a good frost all was well. Hoorah.
Strange that none of the potatoes on garden suffered any damage but those on the lottie, which is just around the corner, did. Shows just how localised frost can be.
I assume your plot is more exposed snuffer. This will give you an idea about how localised frost can be, my wife parks her car infront of mine on our drive as she is the first one out. Hers get frost mine doesn't, how localised is that!!!
I had to get up in the night and put a cardi on; our heating gets turned off on the QT by my OH about Easter; we tussle about it during April but there's no way we're having it on in May!
Going to nip down to both garden and lottie now to see if I've lost anything...after I've made a milky coffee of course.
I was sitting around in shorts and a stringy t shirt last night - lovely mild evening in Dublin. I have a policy about frost on the plot - I try to put things in late enough not to get done, but once they are in, no mollycoddling as it's too far away for trips to fleece up etc. If they are lucky, they might get water once a week.....
Tis grey again and much coller this morning though - long sleeved shirt on at work, and thinking about getting my trusty emergency cardi out of teh drawer!!
spent 3 hours covering plants veg and flowers with fleece and bubble wrap, got up this morning to see if they were ok , looked at the minimum temp 3 degrees, so i wasted 3 hours of my time ,but if i hadn't it would have froze, so you cant win,
Ohh, I darent go look ..... I may pop into the lottie on the way home from work later but can't stand the thought of losing my babies at this stage ...
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance
I'm covering my eyes and going lalalalalalalalala - cos we are in a frost pocket in Benson, but sadly I only have a very small bit of fleece and it wouldn't cover everything at lottie and here at home plot .....so which babies to chose for the death sentence....lalalalalalalalala
tried your advised tactic of lalala... & my G it seemed 2 have worked!went up 2 lottie last night & although a few leaves on our spuds had suffered slightly, assessing the damage on other plots we got away lightly!cheers 4 good advice!!?(might also have had something 2 do with the pallet fence right by the spuds but ,,?
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx
