Hi Minty, Archie shouldn't be having pain at 3 with chicken pox - perhaps he has somehow managed to get a dose of the adult strain instead of the kiddie one. I would suggest a chat to the doctor.

I got chicken pox after my brother and sister years ago - I was 15 and took it really badly - covered with blisters just like you describe and the pain was hideous. As mum had just had my brother and sister at home for weeks one after the other with the rash, and they had run her ragged, she wouldn't believe that I was in such pain. I only found out a few years ago after our own boys gave the virus to Madmax that there are two strains, juvenile and adult. The adult virus can be treated with an anti-viral drug which reduces the pain and the time taken to get better. Maybe if you chat to your doctor they can prescribe something for Archie. Our boys hardly noticed they were ill and certainly had no pain and very little itching.

Hope you are both through it soon

Ask in a herbalist shop as i seem to remember something about a small amount of mint and lavender oil in a bath not sure so check it out first.

Here's something that's meant to help: oatmeal. In a bath. What Makes Chickenpox Itch?

Liquid, sugar-free paracetamol should be given to children under the age of 12. If you suspect that your child has chickenpox... it is very important that you do not give them aspirin. Children under 16 years of age should never be given aspirin, but is particularly important that your child does not take aspirin if they have a viral infection like chickenpox. Cool baths with Bicarbonate of Soda dissolved in the water - this soothes (also good for sunburn!) and will help to dry up the blisters and therefore helping with the itchiness! And lots of ice cream if you have a poorly throat!

When my 3 had it a few years ago they each came out with spots ust as the previous one had cleared up - 6 weeks or so of staying at home urrgh! And it was summer too It also seemed to get more severe the further it went in the threesome - first daughter had very few spots, third was like a braille encyclopedia - yuk!

          Hope you feel better soon!

It's also fantastic for all sorts of irritated skin....

I'm sure I've seen a site he'd enljoy where you click a colour on the screen to colour in pictures without needing to print anything off...but I seem to have lost the details

Have you tried piriton syrup? It's really an anti-histamine, but will often sooth itching for a time no mater what the cause. An added bonus is that given at bedtime it will help him sleep. Hope he's better soon, but it really is better for him to have it now, my mum cared for the three of us when we had it as kids, she also came into contact with it loads of times as a child herself, but never caught it until two years ago aged 69. She was very ill for five weeks and wasn't truly back to her old self for six months.

Definately go with the bicarbonate of soda from the baking aisle in the supermarket, my daughter had really bed chicken pox when she was 2 and it was the only thing that took the redness and itching out of the spots and also seemed to make them heal quickly I cannot recommend it enough

Thank you all greatly for the advise and well wishes, and thanks nicos for the fantastic download links.

A better day for Archie today, although he is still covered from head to toe his tempreture is down and he is slowly becoming the boisterous little fellow he normally is.
Think i was a little bit panicky yesterday but unfortunatley i am blessed with the inability of accepting that i can not fix things and when it`s one you love it really is a bugger,
Thanks again , and i really mean that,
Kev and a silent snoring Archie

Glad to hear he's feeling better Minty.
I remember Lauren having it when she was about 2ish and she was rotten for a couple of days, but recovered quickly. I also remember being very relived that we got it over with early.
Had chicken pox myself aged about 6, and when Dad got concerned that we (me and sis) were't getting better, he took us to the Doc and found that we had measles too! He's never forgotten it, said it was one of the worst weeks of his life!
