I belong to a compertition web site and was looking for gardening prizes to win, as just starting it it can all add up very quickly.
After entering the comps I had a look around the web site and found that it had a forum. And I've been here ever since.

I got it from the newsagents as it had a freebie...seeds I think that month...on

Then found this forum through there.

Trying to tame the mad thing called a garden and getting there I think!

Found it while looking for TKG, free seeds caught my eye really look forward to them coming out each month. Love the cheap seeds offers - many thanks to the suppliers who sent them to me even though I had to send cash, normally we are totally ignored in Ireland Most mags restrict offers to UK residents only. Great mag , great offers - Found forum through mag lots of fun and very useful - Ro

Hi Slug, i also have not subscribed due to the high subscription rate even though it was lowered. In the beginning it was priced as the rest of europe and then it was reduced by £10 f0r Ireland but its still more expensive to subscribe than buy it in the shops. Once again Ireland falls between two stools.

I bought the magazine in a supermarket (a bit ironic really).

              Hi Bramble,

I guess it's the fact that they have to post it out monthly to individuals that makes it more expensive (rather than shipping lots over in one go to the newsagents). Still.... If you're a UK subscriber, you still get it cheaper than buying off the shelf - and that's taking into account the cost of posting to every individuals house!

So.... yes, once again Ireland gets the bum deal!

Having said that - great mag and I'll happily buy it in the shops - but of course... I'd love a cheaper subscription rate like in the UK!!

To everyone in Ireland please rest assured that I am (once again) on the case! The problem is that Irish wholesalers traditionally price UK magazines significantly higher due to taxation. GYO are paid the normal UK price in sterling so are not making anything extra on this price.

I have to say that my favourite magazine used to be Home Farm in the days of Katie Thear as I was looking at a smallholding then & bought that for years, then that was taken over & wasn't as good IMHO, moved on the Garden News & TKG - Garden news became V expensive & 2/3's adverts for Trusses & pilots shirts (why would a pilot need a truss?) so thought bugger that. Shortly after TKG was taken over & wasn't impressed with the format and in a desperate reading frenzy I stumbled across GYO (about issue 2 or 3 I think) didn't like it at all

"won't buy that again" I thought & have got every issue since !!!

I haven't subscribed as I have no trouble getting it but it has comeon leaps & bounds since the early days & seems more joined up now. The test will come in a year or twos time as to how repetetive it becomes - so put the laurels away for a bit

The Vine I stumbled across by accident & have been impressed with it from day one. It doesn't take it'self serious as another forum I go on does. That one Ihave to behave on ....... weeellllll nearly

Here I feel at home withthe rest of the Grapes in the bunch (right - off to be sick now)

Hi Lesley - thanks for taking the challenge of cheaper subscriptions for Ireland - yay!

I appreciate it, as I'm sure Bramble, Rosheen and any other grapes in Ireland do too!

Fingers crossed for a good result....

Hi Lesley J, for sure and certai i know you are doing your best , and yes, i do know theres a tax on mags in Ireland but we still end up having to pay over the odds for our mags plus the fact that most offers and competitions are not open to Ireland. Not getting at you as I know its not your fault, but sometimes it just wears thin.

I saw the 2nd issue in Smiths and bought it to read during all the sitting around you do when you're on jury service. I was chuffed to find a magazine that concentrated on veg and fruit as we were just going into our 2nd year on the lottie.

I spotted the No. 1 mag on the shelf of the local supermarket - it really stood out from the rest. Bought it, loved it and subscribed shortly after. I do know that it is sold in at least three outlets in Lerwick, but they are all snapped up pretty quickly. I read and re-read the mags and have them all stacked up in the corner of the study, not wanting to part with them. (It is normally me moaning to OH to get rid of his stack of mags!)

I've never been a member of a forum before, and think I must have come to it via the online magazine while "surfing" one lunch time at work. I have found the forum to be totally addictive,it is so informative, feel I have made so many friends, and I have plants from some of you growing in my garden and seeds to plant next year. It is also great hearing about regional variations and realising that sometimes I am not that far behind some of you in terms of growth. The various discussions/threads and the magazine itself have made me far more adventurous this year in terms of what I grow and I think next year will be even more so.

                                So thanks!
