              How bizarre!
Tootle's link states that homegrown tomatoes are safe though - thank you!

I wonder if it something to do with the water souces being used?

Do you remember a couple of years back when it was discovered that some Spanish green-leaf salad crops had been identified which had been irrigated with partially treated water - containing god knows what. I seem to recall that either a recall of the merchandise or a stern warning to thoroughly wash was issued. Not a very pleasant thought though.

I guess this is why it is OK to used manure from plant feeders and not from omnivorous or carnivores as the diseases carried are perhaps too close to human diseases. Having said that it seems that it is OK to use chicken manure pellets as a feed even though salmonella is present in many egg laying sources and only destroyed by thorough cooking. Perhaps the manure is heat treated to remove the danger of disease?

Just watch the price of canned tomatoes and other related products rocket over the next few months!

It's only in the US and it's only the Roma types. I wouldn't eat these by choice as a raw tom anyway - they are a sauce tomato. Cooking solves the problem.

Also if you use horse manure or any animal manure on your veg, any anti-biotic's that those animals have been injected with will be in the manure and will be in the veg you eat.

Thats why I only use multi-purpose compost on my veg.

I was surprised by this, but I would argue that the antibiotics will be degraded over time so well composted manure should not be a problem. Also eating veg containing antibiotics would only be a problem to those with allergies.

This info I shared came from a medical and plant expert on gardeners question time on the radio about 5 years ago....sorry can't remember his name.

The reason you don't want to be eating anti-biotics is that they become less effective for people the more they have to take them, so you may unknowingly be eating them via veg and if you become seriously ill they may not help you recover as your body to used to them.

Thats also what he said at the time as well......
