Sorry, Craneflies are the genuine Daddylonglegs and they fly around and are about the only insect I really can't stand (apart from wasps). Long legged spiders are Harvestmen and they don't fly.

Yep sorry must agree with everyone else, and being from both the town and the country must say that Daddylonglegs are Craneflies,, bug zappers seem to attract them really well though

After visiting the US a few times (hark at me!) my Yank girlfriend calls those long legged/tiny bodied spiders Daddy Long Legs. They're not harvestmen, but proper arachnids. I nearly walked into one that was dangling from the doorway of Tescos a few weeks back and that's the first time I've ever seen one in this country. But I've always called the humble crane fly Daddy Long Legs. We say pota-to, they say po-tato!

Have no idea what's what, but the flying things with extra long legs that make a hell of a noise when they fly around a room and hit walls / lights / cupboards give me the heebie jeebies! I remember once when I lived at home there was one in my bedroom and I made my dad remove it and show me the evidence before I would go back in... even then I got into bed and covered myself completely with the duvet. Don't mind crawling spiders though.

I don't know which it was that they call "daddy long legs" back in Mississippi, where I come from, but they were harmless to humans with huge legs and itty bitty bodies. Every other spider scares the heck out of me. We had brown recluses in MS. Are there any poisonous spiders in the U.K.? I really hate these huge house-spiders ya'll have here...

by no means condoning his behaviour but my cousin used to (when he were young!) pull their legs off & watch them fly unable to land!an occasion where i think a swat is far from cruel!I know they harmless but so irritating~give me a spider any day!p.s. before you all hate me I would never do such a thing!!

I know someone that used to call them daddy no-legs on account of the fact that he'd pull all their legs off and then watch them fly for ages.

He was a child at the time (and no, it wasn't me!).

Yep, I remember the boys at school doing that, then they'd fry them using their glasses and the sun. Oooooh boys are mean!
