Lettuce

Hi everyone i've just recently got into growing my own veg and just dug out my first lettuce. My problem is that after a day it wilted,is this because i took it out to early or because i put it in the salad tray in the fridge after using it?

Dig it up, wash it and eat straight away. No need to store it is there?

If you don't want to eat it all the same day, put it in a plastic bag or a bowl with a lid. It will keep for a couple of days, or mine seems OK anyway. The rest of the family will eat salad if I've picked it and washed it, but if they had to do it, they just don't bother. As I prefer them to eat properly, I have to do the prep in advance.

So far I have only grown cut & come again lettuce because I suspected storage might be a problem; one of the benefits of growing my own is that I can just harvest what I want to eat straight away with no need to store.

Give it a half hour soak in really cold water after you pick it... it will absorb water and keep better (but not that long - a day or two in the salad drawer or a plastic bag)

Alternatively, pick it with the root on, and keep it in a jar of water until you eat it.

makes you wonder whats going on(into)commercial plants?shop bought radishes seem to last an age in the fridge,but ones from lottie wilt really quick.we've just learnt to harvest what you need & get the rest when you need it!
