Found some old GYO mags today that my mum picked up some years ago in a charity shop. They are dated 1977 and published in a series of 52. I have just taken on an allotment in june and these will come in very handy. Sometimes the old advice is the best. I was only a very young child when these were first published. They cost 30p each to buy new in 1977, ahh those were the days. Does anyone know if these are the same magazine as this one? Each magazine (A5 size) and focuses on a different fruit or veg.

I got the 52-part GYO from a charity shop as well. Some interesting ideas in there. They mention long departed veg varieties, as well as those that have stood the test of time. Turned to the potatoes, mentions Majestic which is said to be resistant to blight.
I like reading "Ralph Whitlock's Gardening Diary" which says what you should be doing for the vegetable garden, fruit garden and greenhouse.

i collected these magazines when they first came out, i was only about 12 or 13 at the time, i think they were 30p each and there are 2 volumes covering 6 months each, you could purchase 2 brown binders to fit them all in, and they were published by marshall candish.
and yes, i still have my copys all these years later.

The only problem I have with old mags or books is that the advice was always to stick a load of chemicals on your problems! I wouldn't do that now, nor would a lot of 'modern' gardeners - even the old ones!Last edited by Flummery; 22-09-2009, 05:22 PM.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
