My brother in Law

My brother in law died today. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year last December. He fought like the devil to live his life to the full. I loved him to bits because he was more like my brother than my brother in law. My sister and my brother in law live in Zambia where we have had some tremendous holidays with them in the Zambian bush.

He knew everything about the bush and was a professional hunter as was his eldest son.

I will miss him forever he was so wonderful and full of life I will never forget him. I wish there were more people like him in this world.

Catrina - my heart goes out to you in your sad loss. When my parents died within 11 months of each other I took great comfort from this short piece that a friend sent me -

We are standing on a shore. A large sailing ship is about to pull out. Friends and relatives of ours are standing on the deck, waving goodbye, throwing streamers, calling to us, calling our names. And we call to them and to each other. ‘Look, there’s Grandma…there’s Uncle Joe…there’s Uncle Bill.’ A bell sounds. The ship begins to move away.
"We stand silently for a very long time and watch as the ship goes further and further away until, finally, the mast is just a vertical pencil line on the distant horizon. Then it too goes down, until we can no longer see it. And we sigh, ‘Oh, she’s gone.’
"But gone from where? Gone from our sight. That’s all.
"For at the very moment we sigh, ‘Oh, she’s gone,’ another cried on another shore is jumping up and down, laughing and yelling and pointing excitedly out to sea saying, ‘Look! She’s coming. Look, the ship is coming home! Look! There’s Grandma…there’s Uncle Joe…there’s Uncle Bill.’"
The ship is coming home. There is another shore, another dimension in which we have already begun to live. We are filled with the Spirit of our Risen Saviour—forever.

He was obviously a much loved human being and leaves behind a great sense of that loss.

Sorry for your loss Catrina I lost my sister last October to cancer so I know what you are going through and as you are so far away from his family it will be hard. Take comfort from the friends and family around you. My brother-in-law is more like a brother to me, as I was only eight when my sister started going out with him.
The poem that Gwndy has posted is the same as was read out at my sisters funeral.

Catrina, I am so sorry, I lost my Brother-in-law last year he went off to work - car crash - he was young- has left my sis and little girl of seven on their own.
I am like you, I loved my brother in law, he was in my eyes, a brother, friend, and Dad even though he was only a little older than me, he was always there, always helping people, making me laugh, watching over us girls (Mum, Sis, their little girl and me)
One minute he was there - next gone! so very, very hard and I miss him so much.
Time smooths out the raw pointy edges of your emotions but wont ever take him away from you, the memories are for you to keep and treasure forever. His lasting gift to you. Give yourself time, yes I still get upset but the pointy edges are starting to smooth into lovely memories without the total shock and devastation of that awful days events.
