Help! Strange growth in my pot clematis!

I went out to water the smaller pot plants this afternoon and noticed that the clematis in a terracotta pot was looking bone-dry. I went and got the watering can and started to water it....as I watered a strange bubbling of the dry compost happened and an odd 'growth' appeared - it made me jump somewhat! It looked rather like some strange fungal spread...will my clematis be okay?



Oh its still there, but sheltered by a plastic container!

Thanks guys....didn't half make me jump when I peered down to look in the pot and the compost started moving!!!

Anyway, waited for the OH to return and then looked under the 'lid', Toady was still there. So found a cooler corner of the garden and got some bricks and a flower pot and constructed a sort of burrow come hidey hole. On with the gardening gloves and up with the toad, deposited at the little entrance and yes in he/she goes! Result!

Reminds me of the time a few days ago when I found I couldn't get my gardening shoes on because there was something inside them. Gave me a turn when I tipped out a frog!

Treasure your toad SBP. I'm sure you know they are great slug eaters - and so handsome too. What an asset to any garden.
