wild flower count

On your next trip to the plot, do a head count of the different types of wild flowers (weeds to some) that you find! (Get the kids in on this one!)

well over 19 on my plot and that was late autumn last year!!!!

I know on my way home from work, just the ones that are flowering and not inc trees, shrubs,

OVER 31 different flowers! its only an 8 mile trip!

How daft is this, but if I won the big one....the no need to work ever again type of one. I would make a study of flora and fauna found in roadside verges on motorways and dual carriageways as well as the lanes. Wonder what the stats would be.
We have so many wild flowers in our verges in Oxfordshire.....oh here I go again....silly Heafry!

I don't have a 'plot' as such but do have some wildflowers in the garden. Some I've planted like the red campions which my late neighbour gave me & hedge garlic, & lots which self seed such as foxgloves, Welsh poppies & wild violas, I haven't the heart to pull them out if they're pretty! I think motorways are a boon for wildflowers & wildlife, we see some fantastic sights when driving along, red kites, buzzards, owls & wildflowers, I really love the swathes of oxeye daisies you get sometimes, especially on the trip from here to North Wales. (I don't think you're bonkers Headfry, it sounds like a great pastime to me!)

didn't quite get round to doing a proper count,(is that not like admitting to not being too good with yer weeding?!LOL)but our friends have just taken on a very overgrown plot & nextdoor to theirs i stumbled upon several Bee Orchids,not seen them since i was little~field opposite us was meadow & we'd find them hiding amongst the long grass,guess that must be their preferred habitat.they look more like friendly dragons than bees tho! I think like you Headfry:there are so many beautiful wild flowers out there that peeps only see as weeds,as a child i can remember being taught all their names but over the years i've forgotten so many,but what better excuse to relearn than to teach my kiddies!?
