Yip, me too. This debate comes up every now and then, and will for ever more I'd wager.

Takes me longer to read txt spk too.

All teachers now have to pass the English, Maths and ICT basic skills, even if they have GCEs or GCSEs in those subjects. It's quite nerve wracking as these are done on computer in a limited time frame, and even when you are quite able, nerves can cause people to fail. My head of dept is a very skilled teacher, now specialising in ICT, but originally trained in Product Design. He can't spell, always confuses their and there, but can teach his subjects and motivate the kids. Which is more important?
If a pupil asks how to spell a word, I frequently have to write it down to check how it should look, I am a visual learner, I can't spell out verbally with confidence. Mistakes like those that started this thread shouldn't happen, but often teachers write their own worksheets with no one else to check them. Spelling wasn't standardised until people began compiling dictionaries, in fact I seem to remember a thread along these lines a while ago. Give us a break, I'm sure everyone has mistakes slip through the net sometimes, we do try hard to get it right, but no one is perfect.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

So do the words formerly and formally, but if someone was pronounced formerly dead it would imply a miracle.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I'd rather be pronounced finally dead, it gives the idea that I hung around a lot longer than was wanted.
