Road Kill?

I was on a training course today and a colleague came in in some distress. A deer had run out in front of her car the night before and was killed. Not knowing what to do but knowing that the deer was dead she 'phoned the police.
These same police who couldn't be bothered to come out when an air gun had shattered my van window in a busy road were there like a shot.The girl was breathalised and had to give a statement!
My question is,what would you have done?
I would never deliberately or carelessly hit any animal on the road but if this had happened to me(disregarding the"if you hit it don't keep it" law )it would have been in my van and thence to my freezer.
What do you think. (not too harsh,please!!)

That law only exists as far as i know so that people dont purposely kill - if its an honest accident then i dont see why you shouldnt. After all it must be better than allowing the poor thing to rot away and be pecked at by the crows and magpies etc - surely its more dignified to know that its death wasnt in vain if it provided some good food for the plate!

Not sure I'd be in a fit state to think so clearly to be honest. Friend of mine ran over a deer once and it made a bit of a mess of his car. He wasn't able to drive it as he was so shaken up, he thought it was a kid (it was dark).

As far as I know, if you kill say a pheasant say, then you you are not allowed to take it but the car behind could.

My brother lives out in the sticks in Canada and his poor wife was driving into town when a moose leapt onto the road and onto the bonnet of her car. Totalled the car and was lucky not to have totalled her as well.

Next winter almost to the day driving to work at the same stretch of road, same thing happened.

Poor woman is a nervous wreck now driving down that bit of road.

I can almost hear the moose in the undergrowth saying, "Look here she comes, dare you, go on I dare you"

If your car hits a dog or a farm animal, such as a sheep or cow, you are required by law to report the incident to the police. If you hit a cat or wild animal, there is no obligation to report it, but you should ensure that the animal is not injured and suffering.

The Wildlife and Countryside Act ... seems to make it illegal to take or possess almost anything wild however you came by it. All wild creatures and plants are covered by the Act.
Fortunately game birds are one of the exceptions and thus if you find a dead pheasant, grouse, partridge etc, you may lawfully pick it up and keep it. Rabbits and hare may also be kept.

If the deer was owned by a farmer or landowner, it is by definition not a wild creature and belongs to the farmer even if it had escaped. Keeping the carcase is theft.

It would depend on the deer, if it was an old deer, I would have tried to find the home she came from. If it was a roe, I'd have taken it down the pub to make a quick Buck.
