I've not seen the ad, so I'm not sure I get what its for. What happens when you know how to cook lasagne, do you have to go out a buy one for cottage pie?, it could get very expensive.

You'd think with the amount of cooking shows on we'd all have it sussed by now. I watched a programme last night about the largest chinese restaurant, capable of serving 5000 covers, now that's cooking.

I find it hard, when you go from say 2 adults and a child to 3 adults and 3 kids. Portion sizes are all to pot, as you can see I'm not keen on guests.

That's like saying if you don't know how to do something then you shouldn't be trying - anybody having a go should be encouraged.

maybe its actually to teach some parents that theres more to eating than mcdonalds or the chippy, or pie shop, or micro meals??

I've just seen it, and its crap, there's no way I'd buy that. I don't have a ds mind so I'm already at a disadvantage. I love cooking, and don't really understand this I can't cook culture.

Come on what happened when these people were growing up, did they not eat?, unless you are growing up in today's society there is no way that 20/30 years ago you didn't have home cooked food at home. If your parents cooked then you should have watched and learn't, there is no excuse. I was cooking three course meals for my parent anniversary at 11, and not your fish and chip suppers either. My mother still claims the fruit syllabub I made was the best dessert she has ever tasted. I know she's my mum and she has to say that!!

I'm only 32 and my mum's a pretty bad cook - so it wasn't really any encouragement to try and cook myself. Whilst she did "cook" (heat stuff up) she didn't really cook using any recipes. Frozen veg (boiled to within an inch of their life), Smash and frozen barbecue "ribs" or "steaks" - that kind of thing. Mum did a lot of shopping at Bejam back then.

I can honestly say (and my brother and sister will back me up on this) that Mum didn't really teach any of us to cook. We used to have competitions when we were younger to see who could swallow the biggest sprout whole - they were cooked so that you had to "scoop" them up with your fork.

I was 11st (bearing in mind my height) when I met my wife - within a year I'd put on 4 st.

I can't actually remember my Mum teaching me to cook (did she Sis, remind me here?) - I did the usual bit at school.

However, as I morphed into an adult I took an interest in food and attended several evening classes (one of which was Cordon bleu - blimey!). I have since acquired many books, watched 'good' programmes, listened to friends, read recipes here etc and I'm a pretty decent cook.

I guess it comes down to the usual - if you are interested you will learn, if not then there is always Macky Dees yuk.

Cooking, God's way of proving that she has a sense of humour. OK, I'm told I'm a good cook and I learned because I had to - parents were both crap cooks and if I wanted to eat properly, I did it myself. Problem was they were caterers so it was me what did the cooking from a young - I started working in kitchens when I was 10 or so, so bought up with and around food.

And why does the BBC need another 'celebrity chefette' for another series??? And those two tarts who do the Masterchef series, OK John Torode can cook really well but the other 'diamond geezer'?

The computer thingy advert now features a guy cooking as well so that sort of evens the balance I think.

Plant it, grow it, eat it, ain't seasons wonderful, not flown thousands of miles, grown locall or even better in your own garden!!

I'm with HeyWayne here...

my mum really didn't cook much when we were little (mum and dad divorced). I seem to remember lots of stews where I used to take the meat out and throw it under the table because it was to tough till i got caught and got into big trouble! and boil in the bag fish. mum was a scientist and worked late so from young age, about 9 I think, I was in charge of cooking but it was usually just sort out some potatoes and some veg and something frozen I think. when we were teenagers we just used to sort ourselves out or eat out, which living in germany around a lot of americans was pretty normal. mum did attempt a meal on sundays but that was it. she certainly never taught me. I recently visited my mum in the US for 10 days and she didn't cook me a single meal, we ate out the whole time, mainly because she works ridiculous hours.

so...I can cook pretty well now but am completely self taught. not everyone had a traditional upbringing (and I am so glad I was brought up the way I was) so TV and computer programmes are a real help.
