Went to the doctors today, and my foot is too weak to be used for running for the foreseeable future. He said I had a 'wobbly' ankle, and only gentle exercise over many months will improve things Apparently if I run I am in too much danger of going over on it and causing more damage

Listen to the doctor then . Take it from someone who kept pulling in a tug-of-war team until I wrecked my right ankle and now have to be carefull coming down stairs , getting out of a lorry or lifting and carrying heavy objects.
Look after yourself- if you don't no one else will.
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.
This happened to my son, he was out of action for almost a year, and he's so football obsessed that he used to play for three different teams (in three different leagues, obviously) Now it's one 11 a side and one 5 a side, but he's so happy to be back. Prior to taking a complete rest he could only manage ten minutes of a game before the ankle gave out (he didn't need to go over on it, it could happen when he was standing still) and then he could barely walk for days. Had he carried on trying to play he would have caused permanent damage, at least this way he's been able to reach a point where he can play again. Although I admit he was miserable whilst he waited for it to heal. Do as your doctor advises, Claire, my son kept trying to 'fight it' at first and it didn't help at all, only the rest has done any good.
