Where can I buy empty jars with screw top lids ??? All the ones that I buy with things in come with those metal lids and I dont know if I can use them for chutney etc. Any Ideas peeps ????

I think you can use those with metal lids, just use a jam pot cover as well (that's what I do, anyway). If you want new jars, ebay usually has a good selection.

When you put the hot liquid into the sterilised jars and put the lid on, it makes a vacuum seal (sucks the pressure seal down good and proper), my gooseberry chutney has been made in old jam jars with screw top lids.

Only another 2 weeks and I can start to sample it.........yum.

I buy all mine from the bottle company south, they're based in keynsham, bristol
you can buy jars and lids or just replacement lids, they have a huge selection (think you have to buy a box full)
Not sure how much postage would be though 'cause i always pick them up.

Lakeland have them. As long as the metal lid has a sort of pasticky inner coating it's fine for chutneys. I often re-cycle bought jars. Not that I buy jam, marmalade or chutney, but relatives do (when their Christmas present from me has run out!)

I also use old jars~just remember not to put the plasticcy lids in the oven to sterilise!I usuallypop them in a bowl with boiling water~seems to be adequate.

I've always used the 'le parfait' type (bought cheap in France) or put a request on Freecycle - there is usually someone who'd rather give them away than put in the recycling bin!

I put a load of jars on freeshare here, but no-one wanted them I ended up with too many when I put a request out to friends when I was making jam.
Coffee jars have plastic lids if that is any help? I just use jam jar covers, then put the lids on

I ran out of jars and had to buy some yesterday from Lakeland. £4.99 for 12 x 1 lb jars plus £1.89 for 12 lids. Works out at around 57p per jar/lid. That'll teach me not to throw jars away when I've got nothing to put in them!!

I don't know if we were just lucky - but they were from an Auchan near Calais some years ago...I think they worked out at something like 50p each I think I've had to buy a couple of packs of seals since then, but they're still going strong!
