Comfrey - It stinks sick as a pig

I have been checking my comfrey which has been soaking for a while, I decided tonight to use it. Had tissue up the nose, put it all round the garden, took the tissues out of my nose and heaved.

Absoultely disgusting smell - fresh cow poo with the runs , horiffic, my clothes smell of it now, and I've gone round the garden with a hose pipe to try and wash the smell away.

I'm certainly not weak stomach but that is horrendous - I've got to get rid of the rest of the bin fall as I'm not outting it round the garden.

Maybe it wasnt diluted enough!

I put some at the bottom of a large container, layered with grass cuttings. I hadn't put enough holes in the bottom though, so it looked waterlogged after all the recent rain.



I got the drill out and drilled some holes around the bottom - Oh my god!!! Phew!!!!!!!! What a horrendous STINK. It smells like pig sh*t! Comfrey soaking in water, not a good smell.

Fortunately as its dried out the smell has stopped.

Thanks for that NSB but I think anybody could have told you comfrey stinks to the highest heavens. Hope it does the job though. Never had the stomach to try it myself. Thinking about it. Nope - just thought about the smell and definately No No No. Not quite that mad.

That's why I keep my comfrey tea in sealed milk bottles.
I don't mind the smell, cos I know how much good it's doing the plants. (I don't like it when the flies chase me though ... they think it's real manure)

Well that's another thing I've learnt, must admit I'd never really thought about smells from these things.

Cross that one off my list of things to try. Does the same thing apply to using nettles?

Same thing applies to most things you allow to rot in water, they pong, nice!

Use comfrey in poultices, but never heard of using it in the garden! Is it really that bad?

I quite like it - it smells better than rush hour on the roads or all the numpties with their cheap BBQs charring dead animals, or pubs, or most cheap / expensive 'because I'm worth it' perfumes, or the local funeral parlour, or miss millies fried rat emporiums etc etc

Being an omnivore I am quite partial to the smell of dead animals on the barbie but also like the smell of sweetcorn done on the barbie as well.

As far as comfrey tea is concerned I wouldn't go so far as to say "I quite like it" but it's no worse than other manures, spose!

Tea, no I prefer nettle or English Breakfast.

OMG.... I can't stop laughing for the thought of Two-Shed being chased round the garden by flies, with backing music al la Benny Hill

Just add a bit more milk and sugar to it, or if you're posh you could use lemon!
