Tiddly Winks is OK provided a valid health and safety assesment has been made. Protective goggles should be worn at all times in case of eye injury and cloth mouth cover is employed incase of accidental ingress into the airways
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I am sure I overheard a lady at my son's competitive pre-school sports day (and I nearly got thrown out for shouting my self hoarse and barging the other mums to cheer my son on LOL) saying that she knows of a school that ahd banned sports day as it was a h&S risk to run on GRASS!!!!!!!!!

I really hope I misheard her!

Its astonishing. Yes its the litigious society we live in today - thankyou America!

When I was but a mere slip of a girl say around 7-8 yrs of age I remember running out of the sitting room to the kitchen at tea time only to run headlong into my Dad carrying the teapot, cups etc on a tray. It went all over me and left me with a number of nasty sore places, mainly on my chest, which scabbed over in a real ugly way - a huge improvement many would say. Luckily it wasn't a hospital jobby.

Despite still bearing unhealed areas I WAS NOT excused from the obstacle race at sports day - which included crawling commando style under a net thus scraping the affected area. Yes it hurt - but didn't kill me and it did teach me to try hard even when the chips were down. It also taught v.quickly how to develop the best avoidance technique to traverse the obstacle - ie up on my elbows or ouch!

We're breeding a cotton wool clad bunch of softies these days and god help us if ever thay are called on to defend the country under conscription. We might as well capitulate right now.

And as for not letting anyone fail - give me strength - if they don't learn early on how to accept defeat its going to come as a very unpleasant wake-up call when they are truthfully informed they're not as great as they thought. The fat kid may not win the running race - but hey - he may well knock spots of the thin kid when it comes to throwing events. Every dog has his day - in all kinds of ways.

When PC is finally given the old heave-ho perhaps then we can all live much happier and fulfilled lives. This kind of thing makes me so mad and gets me all serious - my next comments will be more light-hearted - I promise....unless.....you have been warned!

If you do not know how to fail then equally you'll have no concept of succeeding. I have found that now when I look back on my schooling, I am amazed at the number of children who were virtual child geniuses which now have very unsuccessful careers. I can only put this done to the fact that as they never had to try harder, they have failed to learn the lessons which are necessary to succeed.

And I'm sure you could sprain your wrist moving a Chess piece or get God knows what disease from those nasty chess pieces unless they've been sterilised before every game!!

What's really sad is that often the kids that aren't allowed to win in sports anymore(because it's too unsporting!!??)are the same children who have to watch their peers excelling in the academic areas whilst they struggle.
Wonder what the olympics will be like this year~Are our sportsmen/women allowed to win?~or will that be a handy excuse if they don't?
We all have strengths & weaknesses & it's a shame that either through H&S or PC gone mad those children who's main strengths lie in the sports field are not allowed to excell.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

NO - they are not - and this one is clothed! Check out the details if in doubt?. Not allowed to own property, cash or deal (in gold-pressed latinum) in their own female names SHAME! Oooooh I how I love a laugh!

We cunningly conceal ourselves beneath our avatars and names!

                  But let the games proceed!

My kids school has changed Sports Day out of all recognition, no longer does each class compete in races against each other, and have First, Second, Third for each race. Oh no, that might make people feel inadequate if they don't win, or come last. Now they have a series of activities at different 'stations' - like 'Throwing a Beanbag", where their mark is written on a sheet. Then they go onto the next station and say, skip for 1 minute and the number of 'skips' is written down. At the end everyone's sheet is marked and depending on the total, they get either a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate.
Absolute RUBBISH! Since when is competetiveness a bad thing?? And I know a lot of kids who really need to learn How To Be A Good Loser!! Plus, I had to tear myself in two to be able to watch both my kids doing events, often at opposite ends of the field.
The secondary school just doesn't do Sports Day at all.

The 3 legged race was always my speciality - my best-friend and I would practice for weeks beforehand, til our rythym was perfect

My son's old primary school banned.....parents from sports day!

Along with other bizarre directives (I couldn't come into school to try and identify my son's lost coat - I might contravene some other childs rights????) - I made dam sure he went to an old fashioned, house based, competition is healthy, type school!

                      I've had more accidents 'than hot dinners' as my dad would say;

I've fallen out of more trees than I can remember

I've been badly run over at 6yrs by a speeding motorist as I was coming back from Brownies

I spent 2 weeks in hospital with my face ripped off after going downhill on my bike and getting the wheels locked in a deep rut left in the tarmac by a council snow clearer - then catapulting into somebodies house

I've knelt(sp)/sat on various eye-watering objects that have required a hospital visit

I got knocked out at school on a regular basis (hockey was not a good sport for me)

I've broken loads of glass - once running through my parents (closed) patio doors....persued by a dog (not a scratch)

I've even been mauled (at 9yr) by a neighbour's psychotic Alsation

There are other 'incidents' but I'd be here forever, But at no point did anyone think ooh, compensation - just think, I could have made a fortune on some of the inccidents. At the time all thought 'god she's done it again'

at my schools sports day (nursery school) we had the sack race, bean bag, mums and dads race, mums and toddlers, egg & spoon race and then a marathon!

in the parents and child race the kids usually get their arms pulled from their sockets by their competetive parents ha ha !!

At my kids sports day they say its non-competitive and then give out a trophy and medals ugh! worse than that, the team that won had over 800 points and the 2nd & 3rd place teams had only 500 points!!!! obviously bionic kids, but also a parent running that team (her own son was in it) had said to someone previous "i am gonna add a nought as cant stand my son not winning" - how bad is that??

parents that cheat gets on my wick - also she dragged her younger boy across the line at our sports day!!!!
