Scotland the Less than Entirely Satisfactory.

    dnidave,
I'm sorry the Aberdonians have fallen short of ideal, but maybe now that you've come to live among them your civilising influence will effect a change for the better.

Are you by any chance an Aberdonian - there's a hint of defensiveness about your post
Spent three years in Aberdeen and a couple more in the surrounding countryside - Ellon, Tarves, Huntly & Cruden Bay - have no complaints about Aberdonians at all - but the weather was pretty grim - definitely worse than where I am now - this little corner of the East coast (Dornoch Firth area) seems to be on the edge of the bad weather as I can often watchthe rain and snow from the fields as I am standing in a T shirt - like yesterday - a belter of a day. (Have to admit I was working like a trojan ansd sweating like a stuck pig - I know pigs don't sweat but it's a saying I've used for years- so maybe it was a bit colder than I felt it was)

        Aberdonians

        Hello S.R.,

        No, but I'm a Scot.

Connolly says Aberdeen's Gaelic for hypothermia, so you're not alone in finding it chilly. Easter Ross is lovely; if you're as good at growing veg. as you are at choosing where to live you'll not starve, I reckon.

          Not a bad lot

          Berr

Aberdonians aren't a bad lot at all - I don't think it came across as it was meant. I certainly hope I didn't cause offence to anyone.

We're out in the sticks and everyone is great and helps each other in any way. Everyone who has visited from England has come back and all have said how much more relaxed it is and how everyone smiles and is willing to make eye contact.

          Apologies to anyone I upset.

Hello again everyone... and a happy new year to all.

Sorry it's taken so long to find my way back to the forum but with one thing or another I haven't really had much time. Little boy has been poorly on and off for about 6 weeks now.

Great to see other people with the same sort of growing conditions as us - I will no doubt have LOTS of questions to ask in the future - we are busy looking at seed catalogues (well actually I'm typing on here and my other half is watching telly with little'un)

              Hi Shirlz,
Another newbie Scot, this time a grumpy old sod from Stirlingshire. I wish you and the kind folk of this forum a happy and fulfilling New Year.

                Hey

I'm also in Scotland - based in a tiny village on the Fife coast. Is there anyone else based in Fife?

I'm back again - like a bad penny I just keep popping up!!

Our veggie growing got off to a slow start this year... mostly because of the late start to summer... but also because the hydro electric decided that they wanted to cut down a load of leylandii trees that were growing up into the high voltage cables!!! These would fall onto our veggie plot so we only planted up a fraction of what we would have done... The soil isn't very good so we are thinking of some raised beds next year and a polytunnel too. If anyone has any contacts for good quality, competitively priced polytunnels that will cope with the winds and the snows of Aberdeenshire then please do let me know.

Can't remember reading any of this at the beginning of the year

Anyway a very belated welcome Shirlz. Get a polytunnel !!! You'll never regret it! Had great fun with mine. I put some pics on the Vine (see threads in Undercover). Try First Tunnels and Northern Polytunnel websites. Both very good and give alot of information.

                    Good luck!

                      Hi Shirlz,
I've just completed erection of my polytunnel after a long delay, and am looking forward to using it. While, obviously,I can't give the kind of advice you'll get from the experienced tunnellers here I did spend a LOT of time looking into products and prices. The impression I got was that there isn't much to choose among them as regards price or quality. As Jennie says, Northern and First spring immediately to mind. I didn't buy from First Tunnels but were I to buy another I certainly would. Their website is excellent, their printed instructions on constructing are first class, and I believe the method they use to bolt the hoops to the timber rail (which you may well favour over a trench) is better than that employed by at least some of their competitors. They seem a thoroughly professional company selling a good product. On the other hand, Northern sometimes have cancelled orders for sale at substantial discounts. You can get onto their mailing list (email) by contacting them via their website, I believe.

                      Good luck!

                      B.

Greetings Shirlz! I'm fairly new to the grapevine my self, and already I've found it great. Welcome to you.
