We don`t take our dogs out after nine in the mornings and before eight at night as it`s to hot for them in this weather as they have an undercoat.(we have a Malamute and a Husky.)
Yesterday and today I`ve had the fan on in the living room and all the windows open to create a draft and they have been laying in front of the fan all day. They have just started to come alive now.
The way I look at it is how would you like to walk out in this heat in your winter woolies and coat?
All the people I`ve seen are in shorts so I guess that answers my question.

I don`t think they would be very impressed with that idea. I just spray them with the hosepipe eventhough Storm likes to try to eat the end of the hosepipe. She likes to eat the water!!!

The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

i loved and lost my dog and it makes me so angry how others treat theirs, would they leave a baby in a car like that, mind you it has been known!!!!

i have some news though, we have been adopted, by Robbie the ginger cat, he is lovely, i am not that much of a cat lover, but he used to live around here two years ago and wont settle at his new house, so when we found him a few months ago and the kids fell in love with him, we found his owners and they asked us to adopt him if he turned up again which we now have! he isnt allowed upstairs or in the front room as OH is very allergic, but he is allowed in the kitchen and study and he loves the garden, he hasnt left in over a week! He is 8 and very good with the kids, he is liking the fuss and doesnt mind the guinea pigs either and apparently he likes dogs as well, so perhaps one day we will have another dog as well.

My two have spent most of the last couple of days flaked out alternately in the full sun then moving inside when they got too hot. Have also discovered they like ice pops and ice in their water bowl
Wouldn't dream of leaving my dogs in a car if was going to be away from them for longer than 30 seconds. I'd rather not take them if it meant leaving them... if you know what I mean.
Walkies have been early/late when not too hot out.

I'm not keen on any animals [apart from ducks, moorhens and penguins] - but don't like to see anything suffer to be honest. It's dog owners that make me seethe rather than the dogs themselves...they can't control them and let them run around barking and gnashing and then lock them in hot cars...I'd happily smash their windows, if I knew what to do with the dog once it had been released.

Perhaps just take the relevant RSPCA's local phone number and watch the action unfold - camera in hand.

There was a poor dog in a van at PC world yesterday, I asked the store manager to find the owner, dog looked very distressed- I know it's nothing to do with me...hell yes it IS!
I know I would have broken glass to get to the dog if I no one had come forward, it only had tiny gap in window and was in a very hot tin can!!! ggrrrrrrrr it makes me so angry.
I know exactly what you mean! If you see a dog in this situation again 'phone the RSPCA or ask the store manager to. They at least have the power to break the window and relieve the dog.

Oldest Daughter was involved with a children's garden at the Malvern Show a couple of years ago and it was alarming how many dogs were in hot cars in the car park when people knew that they weren't allowed to be taken onto the showground. Luckily the RSPCA were there breaking into cars to get the dogs. It's not as if people with dogs don't know...and don't get me started on dog poo on the pavements!

just wanted to say to people who dogs stay in the sun, not sure if its the same but a friends cat did that got very severe sunburn on the tips of his ears and eventually had to have them removed, a bit of sun lotion me thinks

I take my dog for walks in a woodland area so its not so bad even when really hot, although I still reduce the amount of time we are on the walk, normally 1 to 3 hrs, but 1 hr max in this heat even in the shaded woodland area, also take a bottle of water and give regular drinks.

The trouble is that if we have long bouts of extreme weather, be it heat, cold etc, your dog still needs exercise, with hot weather swimming is a good substitute for a walk, a paddling pool for small breeds is ideal, swimming pool if you have one or access to one, be careful though that you keep an eye on your dog as they cant get out of swimming pools on their own and can drown easy, but with supervision it is fine, also some areas have special swimming pools for dogs only, check your yellow pages or such like, dogs generally love swimming as it is very good for them, some dogs hate water, if this the case seek a local behaviourist, if they know what they are doing it is quite easy to get a dog over the fear of water.

Also what I have found helpful when you cant take your dog out in extreme weather conditions is to take him to the front porch and open the door so he can see for himself that it is not right to go out in these conditions, if you dont do this some dog owners may find that the dog hassles them all day for their walk, doing the above can help your dog understand why you arent going on a walk today.

Also in extreme cold conditions if you have a tread mill you can train a dog to use that, its a great way to drain the dog of energy, a dog will build up a lot of energy if it is not exercised and has to release that energy somehow, quite often with a bad behaviour that you don't want, I suggest you get a professional to show you how to get your dog to walk on a tread mill or watch Cesar Millans Dog whisperer program on freeview or you tube, look at the website or purchase his 3 books.
