yeah, i open the door and they look agt me like i've lost my mind, then go to the back, which occasionally i'll open, if i'm feeling like a laugh, then when they see that, they go and look through all the windows, and no i don't open them, decide it's raining everywhere and give me a dirty look (yes cats do have expressions) the big one i think has resigned himself to the fact he's gonna get wet ....... he also lies under the sprinkler when it's on ..... but try giving him a bath and your life won't be worth living (actually he's all bluff and i bath him anyway .... he's pathetic really)

anyway regarding the running in circles, she doesn't do it like 20 times or anything, she comes up puts her paw on me and i'll say what do you want, so she runs in a circle a couple of times, then goes and sits by the door ...... i'm guessing, you thought i meant like 100 times or something.

she has a great many expressions, much more than tail wagging, when shes happy her whole body looks happy, when shes bored she mopes around, and when she's sad you can definitely tell that too. and she doesn't do getting stressed, if she was any more laid back, she'd be in a coma

i believe you, but i still don't understand why you think my dog is neurotic ..... well i mean look, have you ever seen a less neurotic dog?

and before you shout, this was a photo for a website, she doesn't normally dress up in my sons christening outfit lol just the mac, and a jumper if it goes suddenly cold when she's just had all her hair off.

ah right, your dog just circles a few times, thats ok then, its just a response to getting what he wants ie a bit of excitement short lived is fine, I thought you meant loads of times, glad we go that sorted out!...lol

Putting paws on you though is a sign of dominance, a follower dog would never put his paws on a leader in the wild.

I would have to see your dog to evaluate it as humans often get things wrong with a dog, but i always get the full picture from the dog.

          He looks cute though....

              Lovely looking dogs.

Just looking at the pics storm looks a dominant type by his posture and the fact going to higher ground gives more power in the animal world.

if taking a dog out for an hour, first 5 mins let it sniff, pee poop etc, then 20 mins structured walk with the dog just behind you or level but not in front, then 5 mins pee, sniff and so on, if you have a dog that doesnt pee, sniff and poop to start with on a walk then walk for 15 to 20mins and start the cycle then.

Why on earth would you want to take a dog for an hours walk unless it is a greyhound that is in training, the fitter the dog becomes the more you have to take it out to expend all that energy you have created by making the dog fit, if for some reason the exercise is suddenly curtailed you end up with a dog that will release all the pent up energy destroying things chewed shoes, chair legs .

Our previous dog used to look at weather and decide whether or not he fancied going out. Our current dog doesn't care one bit. He wants to go out in ANY weather! Not good for us, I say, let along the dog! Took him out late on Sunday to avoid really hot weather, being all kind and everything, and he still ran round like a maniac, leaping about and generally being his usual doggy self. I, meanwhile, staggered round like a sweating marathon runner about to expire from heat exposure.

Certainly wouldn't leave him in a car at all in the sort of heat we've had over the last week or so.

Boo, our 3yr old Boxer bitch really hates water due to falling in a stream as a pup and won't comtemplate leaving the house if its raining, not even for a quick widdle in the garden.
Max, he's 1yr will go out in all weather for as long as you let him. He does like playing down the local ford, he doesn't swim, but will have a deep paddle if you chuck in a stick. He'll do pretty much anything for a stick or a ball.

You are totally wrong, an hour or two walks of 30mins per day is the bear minimum for any dog unless it is very old, disabled or some medical problem.

Having a dog that has little or no exercise is much more likely to pent up his boredom / frustration with a bad behaviour ie chew the sofa, fixate or obsess over a toy or object.

Dogs are hard wired to want to go for a walk, in the wild they will migrate their territory for 8 to 10 hours per day, walking to a dog is just as important as birds flying and fish swimming.

A lot of people think that taking a dog out for 5 mins for a pee and a poop is good enough, it is not, also no matter if you have a mansion and 5 acres as far as the dog is concerned it is just a large kennel and will still want to explore the outside world.

I cant stress enough how cruel it is not to take your dog on decent walks everyday.

Thats because you choose to let your dog make the decisions, ie your dog is the pack leader not you.

The behaviour you mention about your dog is classic case of not setting rules boundary's and limitations of what your dog is allowed to do.

I am totally the leader in my house and it suits my rhodeisan ridgeback to let me be the boss, unless im out walking with her and she see's a man approach my direction...she goes nuts!!!! but she doesnt do the same if its a woman. When she goes nuts if i say to her its okay and im safe she calms down but keeps her beedy eyes on him, and constantly looks behind her to see where he is. She's my baby!
Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.

Dogs live in the moment, they will move on from any bad experience far quicker than humans will because they don't obsess over the past or the future like we do, in the wild they have to for survival reasons, even the most organised pack will only be successful in 5% of hunts, so if they obsessed over a bad experience, they would simply starve, so they are hard wired to get over things quickly.

What tends to happen is that the human owners dont let their dog move on, ie when your dog as a pup fell in the stream i expect you and anyone else with you went into a high state of panic (understandable), this would help your dog have a negative association with water.

Next time it rains, put your dog on a lead and take it in the garden, it is very important that you remain in a calm assertive state of mind, if your dog digs her heels in and refuses to go outside take a run up to the door as she will find it harder to stop, once outside she may jump protest and go mad, as long as you don't give up and REMAIN in a calm assertive state of mind in a minute or two you dog will calm down and realise there is nothing to fear from the rain.

You may have to repeat this process a number of times depending on how deep ingrained the phobia is, but it will work.

You dont need to, but once she has calmed down you can give her a treat or affection as a reward so she gets a positive association with water, but under no circumstances give affection when in the stressed state as you are just nurturing the phobia even deeper.

After that you can use the same method to get you dog to stand in a low level stream just a few inches of water and so on and up the ante till she has no fear of water anymore.

So now you think dogs say please?...thats humanising a dog, you may think you have a tiny human on 4 legs but I can assure you that you haven't.

I think I will leave it there as unless you realise you have an animal and not a 4 legged human its a waste of my time and you obviously know better than me.
