Atmospherics

A thought occured to me the other night whilst watching t'F-Word.

During the programme the picture kept "jumping" and pausing, with interruptions of sound etc. It only seemed to be on Channel 4 (via Satellite) and it took me back to being a kid and having interference on the telly due to "atmospherics" (according to ma & pa anyway).

Do they still exist? Atmospherics that is, not ma & pa - they're both alive and well, confirmed by their presence last night when we all went out for dinner.

It always happened before/during storms - which it fealt like it was going to do the other night too.

Perhaps evil knievel is the atmospheric pressure, what with him being deceased and all.

Interference with the signal can be caused by a lot of things as reported here.

My great gran used to refer to crackly 'wireless' reception as "Ferrets on the line."
We all now say - "Eh up, there's ferrets on the line!" whenever you get a digital jump.

Don't know about atmospherics, but the weather here is so rainy and low-pressurey, that my head feels like it's going to pop!

My DH is so funny - we've got a nice new digital telly, but if the picture goes slightly skewed or whatever, he always wants to slap the top of the telly, in the style of a 70's dad.

so have i, it froze the other night and i was most put out!! it came back about 3 mins later, but that was 3 mins of interesting stuff lol!

in answer to your question HW, as i would think, i would suggest that there is still atmospheric pressure, even though most of us have dishes instead of aerials!

We used to have a lot of trouble here when the satellite dish was in the wrong place. Everytime there was rain or snow we lost the TV signal completely. KK put the dish in a more sheltered spot and everything has been fine since *touches wood - Klever Keith

On the subject of poor TV signal, just watch the moon landing pictures they showed in the 60's - I remember being soooo impressed with those pictures at the time.

When it comes to Merkans dude, I don't believe nuffink they show me - no matter how long they shine them torches in my eye!

I think 'atmospherics' still affect a lot of things. We sometimes lose the satellite signal, we lost it a week or so ago just before a storm arrived & I'm convinced they sometimes affect the telephone line/internet connection too.

We used to live in a 3rd floor flat on the top of a hill surrounded by trees(cool views!).In the summer when the trees were fully leaved our signal was really bad.only had terrestrial but sometimes could only get a couple of channels & even then we'd have to take it in turns twiddling with the huge arial that we ended up having in the living room to save us having to hang out of the window to adjust!Not sure if leaves are capable of blocking satellite reception but it definately used to make a difference to our state of the ark set up back then.
