How/Where can I find out my Altitude?!

We've recently aquired a pressure canner, and now that the tomatoes are starting to crop, the onions are ready, and my basil's big enough to crop, I'm ready to concoct my own (nicer!) version of Dolmio But before I start, I need to know what altitude I'm at, to calculate how long to hold the pressure for. Where can I find out that information? I asked my eldest son, thinking this is something he might have learnt in Geography, but it seems not...! I've looked on our Ordnance Survey map, and in an Atlas, but it only says how high the nearest hill is

i would have thought the OS map would have told you, your location will be within two contour lines which have a height written on them somewhere (i think they are every 10 metres just find the nearest countour line to you and then the nearest height point and count up or down), this can be a bit of a pain to find and the contours might be well spread out if you area if fairly level ground.

Sarah, if you put your postcode in the search box on this O.S. map site it should show where you live & there should be some contour lines shown on the map to give you an idea of your altitude. I did it with my address & the nearest line said 15 which I assumed was 15ft above sea level but they may have gone metric in which case that could be 15 m., probably more likely, better check that out!

I don't suppose you have satnav or gps device do you? This will give the altitude of your location. How much height does there have to be to make a real difference though?

I've looked on the OS map, and the nearest line I can make out says 120, I think?! But I don't really understand what that means?! I'm sure we're quite a long way above sea-level here, so I don't think it's 120m! Kernowyon, do I multply it by 10?

I can look on my anquet mapping which gives altitude on the OS by hovering my mouse. But I'd need your post code to do it.

It's in Metres multiply by 3.25 =390ft

Sarah I had a look on a map of Skipton & the contour lines varied from 120m to about 170m so 150m might be right for you.
