I saw the first hour of the ceremony and have to say I was impressed, although it was quite amusing that there was a song sung about the environment. They're calling this the 'Green Games' I'm told by the BBC. Had a chuckle about that, too, but then I did notice that most of the stuff in the ceremony was manpower! Clever little beggars!

I'm planning to watch the eventing tomorrow. I do see the point about horses not having a choice, but then wouldn't it be more cruel to actually take them straight over and expect them to perform? The acclimatisation is gradual and involves putting light weight rugs on, using an exercise sheet during gentle exercise, heated stables and the like. Horses in hot countries cope perfectly well with the climates, but horses born outside those climates do need climate training, to 'switch on' metabolic pathways that lie dormant/are repressed. It doesn't take long and I think it's a very sensible thing to do. As Lynda said, vettings take place before/during and after each event. Many of the British team have already withdrawn due to minor injuries or things 'not being right'. I might not agree with many things that go on in the competitive world, but at this level, losing a horse has disastrous consequences for everyone, not just the poor animal and I think they do take better care. It's the local level events where you'll see much more cruelty, trust me.

      Nice avatar, Lynda!

i never said i don't like the olympics, just 3 hours of people walking round with flags isn't my idea of entertainment ....... i like watching the gymnastics, and the horses, athletics, and the occasional other thing catches my eye, but i'm not obsessed with watching everything, like i don't watch the whole of the marathon, i just like to see who wins,

We're not related are we bach, I love all sports actually without exception, if its a sport I watch it, play it, etc. As a kid I had a Javalin and a discus!!, as my dad would happily buy me any sports equipment I wanted. I love watching the marathon, and the london, is a mornings tv not too be missed!!!

I thought the highlights were good, but I wished I had seen it all, the special effects looked dead cool, and having 2000 drummers all playing in unison was fab. Can't wait for it to kick off, may just well stay up!!!

Didn't intend watching any of the opening ceremony, but having heard the little girl singing on the radio, switched on the telly to watch, and got hooked. It was an absolutely fantastic show.

The only thing that troubles me is, how much more tax-payers' money is going to be required for the 2012 olympics to attempt to equal this spectacle (and fail).

I don't suppose we could persuade Paris to take them off us.

The front row of the scrum, quite painful to be honest, especially if the second row lifts aswell as drives.

I always believe that a good scrum is one you come out of with stars in your eyes, I played loose head which means I don't have those cauliflower ears.
