Would you also need to have the water analysed for quality??
I know near agricultural areas the water can be very high in nitrates.
Perhaps that might be ok for certain plants though???..but maybe not for others- nor you for drinking water.

In France you can take a sample of water to the local pharmacists to be analysed for I think about 40 Euros. Here you may need to send a sample off somewhere.
I googled a bore-hole company in the south of England a while ago asking for advice about our French well and they were really helpful just to chat about water tables, analysis etc etc. Might be worth your while phoning up a few for a chat.

I think it's an interesting idea Paul. One of the guys on our lottie has a self dug well on his plot ( bet he didn't have permission) although it's about 30 yrs old and he's only ever needed it a couple of years for emergency vegetable watering.
Our lottie is next to peat bogs and the water table is often only 3" below the surface in the late winter.

I'll be really interested to see how you get on Paul- keep us informed!!!!

My local bottled spring water company closed down due to contamination of their borehole by "fecal matter" which seemd to have gone down the side of the borehole........
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.
