sad chicken tale!

The sunday freebie dropped through the door this morning and on the front page was a story about a chicken that had been attacked by some mindless person/people and had been decapitated! It was living on an allotment in a village near to us, how disgusting is that.

Only one chuck was got at, the rest were left alone, but these chucks had been saved from a battery farm and the owner and more so her son are so sad.

What is the world coming to!!!! I hope these cruel person involved get bad karma!

I'm about to get some chooks for my plot, the plan is to go to the local agricultural show where not only are breeds on show, but their owners will be around for a chat and there are usually at least two poultry suppliers with stands so we can arrange to buy some too. Anyway, back to the point, our main concern has not been so much with housing, feeding and the like, but with security. I know that when I was young lots of plots had chickens, but it's rare now and I'm sure that part of the reason is because plot-holders have seen the mindless vandalism which occurs to sheds, crops and the like and don't want it directed at livestock. I have to admit I'm quite uneasy about it myself and wouldn't even be considering it were it not for the fact that our new second plot is very private and the only way anyone would know the hens were there is if they actually were standing right in front of the run. This won't protect them completely, I know, but I'm hoping that the seclusion, plus other security measures will be enough.
As for the parents who find out that their kids have done something like this, just don't get me started. If it were me I'd be horrified, but I'm sure they just shrug and think; it's only a chicken. It makes me so angry.

Exactly. When I was a kid, we went out and did nothing more exotic than play on our bikes, roller skates and in the holidays me and my best friend had a 'club' with us being the leaders and doing activities with the younger kids. It was one huge family, ranging from 5 to 11 yrs. Even as a teenager, me and friends just 'hung out', sometimes on street corners, but NEVER causing hassle. We never once got a complaint from residents. Then I joined the Air Training Corps and learnt more there than at school!

I discovered last year that my nephew wanted to join the army. Said nephew has been in trouble with the police so much, he has a criminal record as long as my arm, for both violent and non-violent crimes (he was 16yrs old!!). I asked my Mum why my sister hadn't sent him to the ATC, of which there is a HUGE squadron in Blackburn. 'Oh' she said, 'We never thought of that'. Pfffffffff!!! He's actually found himself a job, now, that he enjoys and miracle of miracles - he's stayed out of trouble for a good few months, now! Kids don't use their brains these days. They're practically given instruction on how to wipe their ar5es.

I hope the poor little chook didn't suffer for long.

I can't understand it either. What sort of a sick society are we living in where people do this sort of thing "for fun"? I'm sorry to say that the 60's gave our children much more freedom than we ever had when I was a youngster in the 50's (a good thing to a certain extent) but many children of the 60's have let respect and responsibility for actions slip when bringing up their own children. Many of today's children do things we never thought of doing and would never have dared to do for fear of upsetting our parents, and getting a good hiding as well. I won't tar all children with the same brush, I think that most children are good, are brought up well with love and respect for their fellow beings. It's the minority that make our lives miserable and I really do blame the parents for this. Let's get back to basics and teach our kids that respect is earned either through age or experience. That way they might just listen and get the respect they so crave for themselves in the right way, and not by doing these terrible acts "just for fun"

Rant over now. I respect everyone else's opinions too even though I might not always agree with them. This is just MY opinion

I'm sorry to say that I don't think it's a particularly new phenomenon unique to todays society. My Mum told us a story where some "thugs" near were she grew up did some particularly nasty things to a cat in front of her when she was little 40-50 years ago.

There will always be nasty little chits, it's just the consequences that change.

reminds me of an awful story I heard at a donkey sanctuary in dorset when some kids who were apparently jealous of this boy having a pet donkey cut it's ears off!!! They were both (donkey and owner) so traumatised by the situation that the donkey had ended up at the santuary partly because the boy felt unable to keep it safe and partly because the poor donkey was now seriously wary of humans so being with other donkeys was best for him.. there has to be something seriously wrong with anyone who would do something like that out of boredom or spite or for 'fun'..
