I have slept badly since I had surgery on my neck in, oh ... 1996.
Every little noise wakes me up. I now use earplugs, they help better than anything else.
If you've got stuff going through your brain, write it down (notebook by bed, or type a reminder into your mobile/PDA). Get it out of your brain, and onto the page.
Get some blackout blinds if light wakes you early (eBay blackout lining is cheap)
Holland & Barrett sell herbal "sleepy tea" with Valerian in it. Drink an hour before bedtime (it tastes vile...let it go cold and down it in a one-er)
If all else fails, I have an emergency stash of Zopiclone (last used while camping at a festival on Saturday night!)
