  • Into The Wild

Watched it at the weekend and would thoroughly recommend anyone watch it. Based on the true story of Christopher McCandless (don't look him up if you are going to watch it) who in the early '90s decided to go off and live in the "wild" after he graduated.

Great film, and hauntingly brilliant soundtrack - but then Eddie Vedder is a legend as far as I'm concerned.

Have a look see here if you fancy it: Into the Wild Movie: Now Playing & Coming to DVD and HD DVD March 4th

    Loved it.

I'll go along with that! Got everything he's been involved in - from Green River through Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog (heard CHris Cornell sing Hunger Strike at Hyde Park and nearly cried - I love that song). But I think second only to PJ his work on Brad is probably my favourite. Shame is a masterpiece in my humble onions.

Hell yeah! I bought the Velvet Revolver album on the strength on Scott Weiland (and the legend that is Slash of course), but I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

That was the first song I heard by them - it has a special place in my collection. I reckon I'd be doing the same though, lol.

I love EVERYTHING Stone Gossard's done.

Brad was just laid back and lovely; and Green River - brilliant. Most of Sub Pop stuff was cool; I saw PJ at Finsbury Park with Neil Young - it was excellent.

We were backstage at Reading the year that SG and chums were there- but they didn't come into the general guest area [probably a good idea with me there!] I waited until all hours for Stone to come out but he never came. I was a very unhappy bunny. I still am come to think about it.

Very jealous - never been able to see PJ, and tickets cost a fortune now whenever they tour in the UK (too rarely). Was a member of the fan club for a while but it's all U.S biased.

Saw this film in the cinema months ago and fully agree with HW its fantastic. Its a real heart wrenching story that really hooks into you. Loved it so much I bought the book and sound track. Book isn't up to much but the soundtrack is amazing. Out of 10ish tracks there are at least 6 that I could pick as favourite. Sadly its less than 30 mins long which is the only downside.

HW - Any recommendations of Pearl Jam albums like this? I bought rearview mirror "best of" hoping to get more of the same but its mostly rock rather than acoustic.

There's a guy in Dorking who lives in the wild. Apparently he builds shelters on Holmwood Common and you often see him walking through Dorking and along the verge of the A24! Sometimes I envy him!

                      And me
I remember Mother Love Bone being played to me by a pal, and just as I decided I liked them they disappeared. But Eddie Vedder's voice, wow!

And I love Stone Temple Pilots too - introduced my friend to their first album the other day, big mistake - she loves it and I dunno if I'll ever get it back...

If you're looking for purely acoutic albums, you're gonna struggle. There are some great live recordings - Live at the Gorge is legendary. The song "Better Man" will tug at the heart strings (well, it does me anyway).

PJ are known as a rock band - but if you can get hold of a recording of their Storytellers session (on VH1 I think) it should get you going.

                        Here's a sample I've just found:

YouTube - Pearl jam storytellers Alive story

They also did an MTV unplugged back in the day, but hadn't recorded many of their later tracks obviously.

                        They've mellowed with age.

Binaural might be a good album to go for. Try these tracks:

                        Nothings As It Seems
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Nothing as it Seems (Nurnberg '00)

                        Thin Air
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Thin Air (with lyrics)

                        Of The Girl
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Of The Girl

                        Sleight Of Hand
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Sleight Of Hand

                        Parting Ways
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Parting Ways

and, this one from Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam

                        Parachutes
YouTube - Parachutes - Pearl Jam

If you prefer the acoustic-ish ones I'd say try
'Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town' off the Vs. album

YouTube - Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town

And agree with HW about Better Man, but don't forget 'NothingMan' off the same album (Vitalogy)

YouTube - Pearl Jam - Nothingman
YouTube - Pearl Jam - Betterman

Good call on both counts. I hadn't considered going that far back. "Daughter" might be worth a punt too.
