Just an idea could this thread be made into a regular feature for peeps with puter problems?

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

It looks like this can most easily be done from inside the program

Enter Works and open up a blank s/sheet

      File
      Open

drop down to 'types of file' and select

'Excel97-2003 (*.xl*)' - if you select All Files (*.*) the *.xls will be available by default along with possibly countless other material.

find your filename and hit enter - it may ask you which sheet number - select sheet 1 - eh viola! it will be imported into Works for you to amend/view.

This works on my Works to reimport from another format.

However if you try and just click on the file from a folder - such as My Documents or directly from an emailed file (although I haven't tried this) - it will baulk and complain that it cannot find a compatible program and ask to search web for appropriate program to open file.

Its a little more complicated but can be fixed if you know your way round the file opening system.

Find the File in the Folder and r.click and 'open with' - windows cannot open this file - press radio button 'select program from a list' OK

On the next window 'browse' and find the Microsoft Works Folder - select wksss.exe - open

This will add Works S/Sheet as a method to open a *.xls filetype. At some point you will be given the chance to select this choice as the default program for this filetype. You'll still have to select sheet 1 etc but this also works.

Either method will do but only attempt 2nd method if you feel confident enough around the file/system area.

      Happy Excelling!

My late OH was one of the country's "guru's" on computers. He wrote the government White Paper on "Open Systems". He wouldn't touch Microsoft (used my computer when he had to). He used OpenOffice and Linux for stuff that didn't accept OS2.

This probably sounds like gobbledegook. But OpenOffice is so like MS Office it is easy to work out how to use it. It's free to download and doesn't complicate things.

        Quarks advice is good too.
