Trouble with pots and baskets is that although it may be hi***ng down, if you've got good plant growth it stops the rain getting to the compost in said container. The water that hits the leaves usually ends up dripping onto the ground around the container instead of soaking into the compost. If plants are in open ground this doesn't matter as the roots can still access the water.
