Get to him now before the socks and sandals look gets hold of him...I wouldn't say I'm a fashion icon or anything but OH is a physicist and yes, he does wear the dreaded S & S combination...

But other than that I still think he's pretty dishy

I did this too, I thought there was only me who could maintain that level of boredom for three years, but the MSc was virology. I was a mature student though, so definitely uncool.

Congratulations to Lynda's lad and Zaz999.

It's a few years since my daughter got her exam results and I remember her rushing through the door in excitement. Now I love to watch the news when they show the faces of the kids reading their results, its a joy to see their relief and excitement.

I don't quite understand why Bachelors are three year degrees in this country. They are four year degrees in the States. Maybe we're just slow, or, our comprehensive educational system just takes a little longer. And, I certainly don't understand how you could be bored in Genetics! You must be kidding ole Marigold. I think I need to go lie down to get over the shock!

The funniest thing happened to me today. Theres a girl who keeps texting my mother by mistake instead of her friends and she sent one today saying 'You better get good results today smelly!' So I had to reply - 'You've got the wrong number again - I do hope you didnt take A level maths'. To which she replied, 'actually I did - whos phone is this?' Well, once I stopped laughing and feeling a bit guilty I apologised and said it was my 70 year old mothers. She said 'Say hello to your 70 year old mother, she doesnt look a day over 30 - shame you didnt get her genes cause you look 50+'. The girls a genius - she should have taken drama!

                JEEZ

Just got my grades through the post and out of 300 marks I was 2 below an A.

I got a B for one part of it and an A for the other; combined it is a B.

                Drat and double drat.

Genetics, as and of itself, is not boring. Unfortunately when you turn up for a lecture there's a one in two chance that it's going to be pure statistics.

I'm not surprised by their apathy - only 2.8% of those who sat an A level failed and 25% of all students were awarded an A grade. They mean nothing these days - even the students seem to realise this now!!!

Harsh I know - but true.
However, Lynda's boy may have got 99%, which makes him special and far more able than those with much lower % (70% even is poss for an A grade)who were also awarded an A. Do you not think that the grade should reflect the ability and not the government??

Now that I am studying to be a boring Maths teacher in this country, I have to be more involved in the educational politics. I've read that the A* grade will deal with the small percentage of people who make a higher mark in the A levels to help universities shift through the tons of A grade passers. This is a great idea. In the states, we give an A grade (which most of my grades were) to those who pass 90% or above. B grades went to those who got 80-89% and C grades went to those who got 70-79%. We had a further demarcation of those in the A grades. A- to those who got 90-94%. 95% got a regular A, and A+ grades to those who got 96+. What's really scary, to statisticians and the masses alike is when a majority of your students get an A grade even after all these attempts at fairness, A "normal, " respectable C becomes failure, and an A becomes the norm. Grade inflation is a real problem in the states, but I thought it was different here where many of the exam graders are independent of the schools where the students are.

There are also those who think that the A* will give an unfair advantage to the upper middle classes who naturally have more opportunities, food, etc.

we were hoping they would bring the A* grade in, as then he would have had 3 A*s and an A and a B for general studies (which doesn't actually count as an A level when it comes to university) as he was a couple of marks below .... he also took an AS level at school in critical thinking and got an A in that too and he got 10 A*s and 2 A's and a B at GCSE ..... if you'd seen the amount of work he did to get those, then you wouldn't be saying that ...... ok maybe the exams aren't as hard as they used to be ..... but criticising the kids that work hard, and pass their exams isn't fair ....... whose fault is it that the exams are supposedly easier?? certainly not the kids ....... and i think they still deserve every credit for their achievements ....... they do the work they are set.
