  • Frog Warning

Just thought I'd put a little warning on here as I nearly had a death in the garden today! I was out deadheading flowers on the patio when I suddenly heard a thumping & splashing noise. I traced it to the galvanised watering can which I keep on the decking & found a poor little frog desperately trying to get out. The can was about half full & he couldn't get his feet on the bottom to leap up & couldn't reach the rim to climb out. I got him out & sat him on some kitchen paper in the garden while he got his breath back before leaping off under cover. I've now emptied the can & left a stick in it so any further casualities can be avoided. See pic. of little fella attached.

what a super chap - we get the occasional one in our garden, but I thought they need access to water which we don't have..do they migrate from their ponds out of the breeding season?

We to are over run with babies and adult frogs. They seem to be every where.Every time you water anything you get jumped on.I'm not very steady on my feet, and dread toppling or wobbling over onto them!

LOvely pic SueA. Thanks for letting us see it. Yes it is a problem frogs face. They seem to be able to jump into water, but not get out. Good idea to leave the stick for them to climb. I try not to leave water standing about the garden as all we get is mosquitoes, and they just love me.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

My mum-in-law also has lots of frogs in her garden & she doesn't have any water there at all ,but the end of her garden is a bit boggy, so they seem quite happy to live without water. The pond we have is tiny but I have seen the frog swimming in it. We even had one hibernating in the compost bin this winter, apparently that means it was probably a female as they like to hibernate on land & the males prefer in water. We visited a nature reserve earlier this year & after I nearly stepped on a tiny baby frog on the path I spent most of the time looking down trying to avoid them & missed seeing everything else!
